Director:Ron Howard

Writers (WGA):David Koepp (screenplay) and
Akiva Goldsman (screenplay) ...

15th May 2009.

The adaptation of Dan Browns popular Angels & Demons is days from release, and I thought it would be nice to have a topic for it.

A lot of people disliked The Da Vinci Code, but it seems Angels could be a lot better.

The story in a nutshell.

An old group of scientists who were brutually murdered by the church in the 1700's have returned, stealing a droplet of antimatter from CERN (Large Hadron Collider). They hide it inside Vatican city which will blow up in six hours, destroying the sacred city. The problem being that the whole world is waiting for a new pope to be elected, and the city is full of people.

Robert Langdon is called in because he is an expert at everything, and when he arrives they discover that four cardinals (the ones most suitable for the role of pope) have been kidnapped by an unseen assassin, who threatens to kill one every hour until the destruction of Vatican city. Langdon being awesome works out that the killings are going to take place at four locations sacred to the Illuminati, and spends the evening trying to work out where these public assassinations will take place, and try to stop the killer and find the bomb.

The movie will feature a lot of Tom Hanks running around as he tries to work out where the next cardinal will be murdered.

First Review.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/fil ... 9172.story

Bottom Line: Violent, occult thriller delivers as promised.

Hanks fits more comfortably into the role of Langdon here, taking a moment to deliver some friendly one-liners. If "Da Vinci" was criticized for the lack of sexual chemistry between its protagonists, "Angels" simply refuses to suggest any kind of romance between Langdon and Vetra. Their total lack of a relationship is so stunning successful that it passes unnoticed.

This allows Koepp and Goldsman to concentrate on what the audience really wants to see: burning cardinals, spectacular explosions and incomparable studio reconstructions of Baroque Rome.

Tom Hanks, suit, flashlight, Eerie church.

Tom Hanks commanding his own swat team? **** hell.

Honks and Vittoria try to save one of the cardinals.

F*ck you, I'm Tom Hanks.

I don't like this one bit.

I have a feeling it will be. Doesn't even have Audrey Tatou.

I want to see this. I thought The Da Vinci Code was excellent.

I must confess I've only read The Da Vinci Code so maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I don't think so.

I've read them both. You are bang on the money. I only finished them as I was compelled to see how bad they were. They are the literary equivalent of picking at a scab.

Take good screenwriters. Drop the gooseberry fool bits of the book, even if it means essentially having to rewrite the whole bloody thing. Add major setpieces = Money.

The book was better than The Da Vinci Code and the complete lack of accuracy regarding the science amused me.
