PostThe No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - BBC1
by KK » Fri Mar 20, 2009 12:49 am

Anyone been watching The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency on Sunday night? I thought the pilot last year was fantastic, thus I've really been looking forward to this series from the get go. It's wonderfully heart-warming, feel-good programming, & the setting makes it stand out out from the crowded detective market - as does the humour. It's perfect for a Sunday evening.

If you haven't seen it, give it a whirl on iPlayer.

Unfortunately it clashes with Lewis from here on out, which is a bit of a shame for those without a PVR or internet access. It's always the way, isn't it? Two fantastic dramas that have to go head to head, so a good portion of the audience have to miss out.

Yeah, I'm a fan of this. Thought the pilot was fantastic and caught the first episode this week. More of the same- Jill Scott is great, but her assistant steals the show.

Convince me. What elevates this over the usual MOR-on-acid Sunday evening dramas?

It's got blacks innit mayne. So, it's a bit like Desmond's mixed with Miss Marple.

  • It's set in Botswana.
  • The detectives are ladies.
  • It's made in conjunction with HBO.
  • The pilot was directed by Anthony Minghella & Richard Curtis.
  • It's only an hour, so won't take up your whole Sunday.
  • It isn't miserable like everything else on TV.

Only disliked by A) Racists & B) The Guardian.

Why not?

I did see an ad for this on the tv while I was home, so I'll be watching on iPlayer soon.

To use the iPlayer you have to install realplayer, which I'm led to believe, is full of spyware and other delights.

Disliked only by the Guardian? Everything I've read about this says it's sickeningly twee.

And what is wrong with that, exactly? Isn't a programme allowed to be pleasant?

Yes but we want fast paced action with high concepts and plot twists.
