As a fan of David Peace, I was waiting for this with bated breath. The quality of the actors and the great plot of the first in the series of 4, 1974, were sure for a great drama.

I was gripped for 2 hours. Andrew Garfield has to be one of the best young actors in the world.

I hope everyone gets a chance to watch this and the next two - which are sure to be immense.

It was excellent, wasn't it?

Really intense, great dialouge, great acting, good ending too.

And I loved the accents! I think this was probably better than Boy A.

Is it just me or did the main guy look a bit like Max Payne in a few scenes? Also the height of badassery when
He walks into Sean Bean's club, beats a guy possibly to death and then calmly shoots two more

Gah, I forgot all about this. I'll have to watch it on 40D, which just isn't the same. Hopefully it'll be repeated late at night over the next week.

I think it's only a series of 3 by the way, though the books form a quartet.

The best two hours of TV I've seen in a very long time. Absolute class from start to end. Sean Bean deserves special mention for his chilling portrayal of a particularly nasty specimen of 'self-made man/absolute scumbag'. Wouldn't surprise me if his performance gets a nod from the BAFTAs. The whole film was, for me at least, as gripping as something like Sexy Beast - well observed characters, a cracking good script and, above all - adult entertainment for an adult audience. No compromises, no pandering to censors or the like. Also like to mention the photography - strangely beautiful, but also quite terrifying. The evocation of a particular time and place (and I was 11 in 1974, myself) was spell-binding.

I can only hope the next two films in the trilogy come anywhere close to this opener.

10/10. Channel 4 should rightly feel very proud of this work.

I wont be reading this thread. Soilers and that. I set my digibox to record it and I'll watch it over the weekend.

Little Red Rides the Hood 2 is the best interracial porn I have ever seen.

4OD doesn't work on a Mac, does it?

Aye, t'was. Very.

The whole thing was kind of like a cross between a Mike Leigh and a David Lynch film, and was quite superb in places - notably the torture scene that gives new meaning to the phrase 'Police Brutality', where the pigs wind him up and let him go, twisted into a man who can only have one bloody path; that was some dark gooseberry fool. Also, the scene within Dawson's house during the fancy bash he was throwing, reminded me of Yuzna's Society in the way that such a grip was held over practically everybody Dunford knew. However, despite the characters being well-observed, and the script being pretty decent, I still felt it was far from perfect. Andrew Garfield is an undeniably talented actor, but it was severely hard to suspend my disbelief that this bouffanted, creepy little streak of piss could have such a strong effect on the two lassies he pumped in the process of the story. I understand that underpinning this particlar episode of a tale of police corruption and the evil men do, was a simple foundation of (youthful) pride coming before a nasty fall, and therefore there was a necessity to show Garfield celebrating good times come on for a short while, but I just couldn't fathom the gurning lad's appeal.

It also felt a little rushed towards the end, with only Sean Bean's psychopathic character's word for it that he was responsible for the murders, as he had his 'private weakness' to blame. I usually adore such a minimalistic, and un-patronising approach to story-telling, but this story might have benefited from a little more examination of Bean's character (not excusing his actions per se, in the way the awful Red Dragon did where Manhunter was gloriously vague, but still shedding a bit more light on the story's most interesting character), and therefore more screen time for him to do that.

Still, though, it's the best Brit drama I've seen since The Long Firm, and I think the best is still to come. Next week, ey oop it's the Ripper.

I hope so. As a writer, you could learn a thing or two about great screenplay writing from this. This was as much about what wasn't said as what was.

It was good but too predictable. I was guessing whole lines of dialogue before they happened.
