We had a guy come round to quote to replace some misted window panes, and while he's measuring up the windows, he comments on the building work next door, and the size of the extension going up, before turning to my wife and I and just asking "[racist term for south Asians goes here]?"
He read the immediate reaction from both of us, and mumbled a half apology before we could even say anything, but honestly, what the strawberry float goes through these people's heads? I've noticed it a lot since moving to the west midlands, there's plenty of people around here who assume because I'm white and they're white, then they're free to just be racist about all the Asian families that live round here, like they just expect solidarity in another white face. It makes me strawberry floating sick.
And now we've got to go and get someone else to come out and quote for window work, too.
Years ago me and my wife used to drink in a pub and got to know people in there. They weren't our best friends or anything, but we got to know them quite well and had some good laughs.
That pub closed down and a year or so later we went out for a drink in a different pub and there were some of the old crowd in there. While chatting, one of them just suddenly said "probably a good job the pub closed down, it was getting full of n***ers". He didn't even seem to notice that he'd said it in front of my (very obviously) black wife. When she said "what?" he went on about he was only talking about the bad ones.
I also remember not long after I met her we were out in some pub and she went up to the bar to get drinks. I bumped into an old school friend while she was up there paying and he asked who I was out with. I said "my girlfriend" and vaguely pointed towards the bar. And he said, "what? The darkie at the bar?".
TL:DR - people are banana splits.
