This is a valid point.

Also, Walking Dead; really that good? Thinking of picking up the first book tomorrow. :shifty:

Is it a "does zombies a bit different" or "ultimate zombie horror in comic form" kind of series?

It's about the humans really and how they develop throughout the crisis. Buy the first hardcover.

Essentially this. Imagine Dawn of the Dead, serialised.

It's very good.

Also :fp: @ MCN.

But all that has been said has already been said.

Might have to pick this up. Been wanting to have a read of something for a while now and I've always found zombies to be the creepiest "monster". Just the sheer hopelessness if you were swarmed by them. As obviously not everyone has a shotgun and can get a headshot from anywhere.

What's this Survival Guide like? It rings a bell. Is it better than WWZ? I can only afford one book right now  .

I found the Survival Guide a little bit comedic, kind of a dummies guide to various situations. World War Z is serious at all times (aside maybe from the reality tv bit), significantly darker. I think buy WWZ and go back to Survival Guide at a later date, WWZ is just brilliant. Plus WWZ is a much bigger book and therefore better value (they are both about the same price).
There seems to be a follow up to the Survival Guide coming later this year, I'm kind of disappointed that Max has chosen to flesh out that style of writing instead of the style from WWZ. There must be so many other stories that could be told during the WWZ timeline.

MCN do you not see how your comments can wind people up (assuming you were not doing it on purpose)? A thread is started for people who like WWZ to discuss the book and/or the movie. You come into the thread basically saying "Zombies are gooseberry fool" and whenever anybody offers a counter arguement you just say "This is my opinion and I am sticking to it". Anybody who then says anything to you gets "I am controversial and you lot are just sheep" thrown back. :fp:

Personally I don't give a gooseberry fool what you say/do/think but can you really not see how and why you wind people up?

Oh and you asked why you should spend money on the book? You shouldn't as you wouldn't enjoy it.

Good Morning folks! I was suprised and pleased to see this topic still blossoming but then I seen that MCN came in and trolled. :fp:

Anyway, I have never read the book but as I said, I listened to the audiobook which puts accents on the strories and really had me at the edge of my seat. It really is awesome. I do get the urge to play L4D non stop now tho.

As I said in my opening post, the army parts are the best because they portray the actualy fighting but its offset brilliantly by the stories of every day people trying to cope with the epidemic.

I'm gonna re-start my listen at lunch today.

The Pilot waking up in the tree with up to 100 zombies underneath was s*** scary!

I think Mark Hamill is a narrator on the audio books?

I'm sure it sounded like him.

He's not the narrator, thats Max Brooks himself but he plays
Todd Wanio...can't remember who that was...

Henry Rollins plays the soldier tho.

Todd Wainio is the soldier who is the focus of the Yonkers section (and the later sections of the push through America). Rollins plays T. Sean Collins who is the merc who tells a couple of other sections (reality tv siege bit).

I like how the book covers the social/economic aspects of a breakout. Instead of the usual zombie story.

Might pick up the audio book now, sounds awesome. Next best thing before the film comes out :)

I liked in WWZ how some characters actually mentioned the Zombie Survival guide that Max Brooks had brought out  Thought that was a pretty cool touch. They don't specifically name it, but at one point someone says (along the lines of) "..that survival guide that guy brought out was only useful for the americans" or something like that..

Sorry, I get a boner for gooseberry fool like that :fp: :shifty:

Have just 'acquired' the audiobook so will give it a listen. Just don't have time to read the book at the minute (my housemate has it). Been meaning to for a long time and this thread has motivated me.

Watched the first episode of Dead Set last night, was quite good. Ordered it from play.com earlier. Pity it's only a miniseries although I suppose it would have been hard to stretch it out.
