Would 7 require a more powerful system to run than Vista?

For instance, would my little vista laptop be able to run it properly?

The opposite really, performance should increase when you put 7 on a Vista machine.

:o Wicked. Is the £30 student deal still going?

I think the student deal is on until the end of January or thereabouts. So just get it during 1st semester.

More efficient, more stable, highly refined, the new taskbar is a joy to use, as are the Jump lists (I don't know how I ever managed without them!), and I think the improvements to the Aero interface are great, too.

If you are upgrading from 32-bit Vista to 32-bit Win7 then it keeps all of your files.

Ah it must be 64-bit to 32-bit that doesn't work.

I ordered a Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade disc, which didn't specify a version. The despatch note details it as the 32bit version.

Quick questions...

- Do the upgrade discs include both 32 and 64bit versions?
- If both versions aren't included, would I be able to aquire the 64bit version and use the serial key from the 32bit version?

Merci

Is there any reason not to get this then? I have Vista at the moment, and can do the £30 student deal.

As long as your PC came with Vista you should have no issues upgrading and it is certainly a good upgrade for £30 that just makes the computer nicer to use.

I did actually manage to install 32-bit Vista Ultimate with a key from my mum's 64-bit Vista, but I think the keys you get with this deal are upgrade keys (my mum's was OEM full license) and so only work with upgrade disks/ISOs. Maybe you could try downloading an upgrade disk that's 64-bit and then put in your key. However installing 64-bit over 32-bit doesn't work unless I'm mistaken, you have to perform a clean install, and people have had problems trying to do that with what is meant to be an upgrade disk.

Safest thing to do is to just stick to the "bit-ness" you've got and upgrade from Vista. That's MS' intentions.

I shall be doing a clean install from XP, so I'll download an upgrade disc and give it a try. I'll post if I'm succesful or not!

When installing, is it possible to keep all your files on the computer? or do you need to do a clean install.

Also, would it be possible to keep only certain files, and whipe the rest? If the above is possible, obviously.

The thing is, I don't have easy access to an external HD, so gooseberry fool could get complicated.
