Anything to do with games at all.

Arrrr, I think I'd rather try and emulate anything from the SNES era and older on a handheld. I've got a relatively decent GBA emulator on my phone.

I'm interested in the PS2 emulation though, is that as far along as Dolphin seems to be?

Yeah PS2 emulation is quite far along BUT it's actually more resource heavy and buggy than the gamecube emulator which is why I haven't posted about it yet.

I've got games running on PCSX2, but even my rig struggles even though it can do some gamecube games properly.

There actually has been a new version of PCSX2 that has come out but I haven't tried it. Check these out:

The PS2 emu needs a shitload more work even though a lot of games are playable.

Also snes emulation with gamepads and co-op on Secret of Mana 2?

Totally pwns the handheld versions. Also emulate snes on PC or laptop, no other handheld comes close to the PC emulator at all.

So I have a 2010 Macbook Pro (13 inch)... will I be able to run Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Dolphin in HD, do you think?

Try out the emulator as I'm not sure. I bet you could probably run windwaker at 720p though.

All I really know is that the power that my midtier rig has will be available at a lower price as time goes on, meaning those that are new to the PC scene or upgrading, they will definitely be able to get the best out of the gamecube and PS2 emulator in the near future.

I mean the GC/wii emu ain't perfect, but it's pretty damn good so far. Everything prior to the PS2/GC era though runs perfectly on rigs that are less powerful than my midtier comp.

Ah yes, I think I know why I was not happy with Remake, I was running it with no AA or anisoptropic

 I actually enjoy the trolling in this thread by haters. The more impressive results you post brer, the more "he mad" they all get.

edit: if you go back and look at my screenshots you'll see how much of a difference AA and anisop makes, as without it the games are just so jaggy.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to configure the graphics and such in Dolphin to make Gamecube games look pretty on my Macbook Pro?

Also, does it support the PS3 controller if I connect that up via Bluetooth?

I don't know how it works for a mac, but hopefully that helps.

On windows, I set mine to dx9. I use at least 2x antialiasing, and 4x anisoptropic.

If your ps3 controller is configured on your macbook and already works with it then it should show up in the emulator for you.

Don't forget www.emuparadise.org, add that to your favourites, they have roms, and video game soundtracks. All legal backups.

This is a direct link to the gamecube roms, alphabet at the top so you can browse through them: http://www.emuparadise.me/Nintendo_Gamecube_ISOs/42

There's probably gems out there that you haven't played like Skies of Arcadia (actually don't know if it's a gem but it's highly rated and is on my list to play), Killer 7, Ikaruga, etc etc.

Remember that many games perform differently, so don't give up on the first bloody special effects heavy fancy game you decide to try out. Try out other games, they might work well. For example the Wiiware and smaller games like Muramasa.

Thanks, $ilva. I set Dolphin up to display at my Macbook's resolution, but wasn't sure where the AA options and such were. Will investigate. Once I turned off all my other running programs, Wind Waker's title screen ran at 60FPS. Then I had to get back to the office, unfortunately! (I'm not sure about the native resolution options - presumably it's upscaling to my Mac's res when Dolphin's native resolution is set at 640 x 480? And there will be a big performance hit if I increase the native res? Hmmm.)

There are two resolution settings the "fullscreen resolution setting" this should always be set to your screen's native res and does not affect how hard the emulator has to work, this just lets the emulator know how big your screen is and where to draw the output if you want to play full screen instead of a window.

The resolution in the enhancements tab called "internal resolution" is the important one, that is how high res the emulator will render the game, obviously higher resolutions mean more work. You could try running the emulator in a window, and setting the internal res to common resolutions like 1280x720 to see how the game would run at 720p, and if you're still getting rock solid 60fps, then crank up the res more.

Ah, brilliant. Thanks, Winckle. Presumably when I find the AA options, they're another performance hit? Can I lock FPS to 30 if the rate's flickering all over the place?

Setting the frame rate to 30 will make a 60 FPS game run twice as slow and butcher the audio.

Hmmm. So it's best just to leave an unlocked frame rate, even if it's going up and down? (And then look into lowering the resolution if need be?)

It's just that pre-rendered backdrops don't upscale well, so I was wondering if Brer had some fancy pants backdrops to help with making RE "look incredible". I don't know how it would work, but I was just wondering if someone had done it.

 I was asking before I flipped my gooseberry fool just in case.

No but you won't see custom textures and gooseberry fool like that for the gamecube emulator for a long time. I don't know if it's possible or not, but the only emulator that lets you use modded roms and custom textures so far is for the n64 emulator where people have added high res textures to Zelda games.

Actually there are some hi-res texture packs available for certain games. Searching the dolphin forums brings up a few results:

One of them is a guy retexturing RE4 with assets from the PC version.

There's not a lot there, and it's mostly Wii stuff, but the work is being done.

Ah well. Wind Waker only runs at an average of 20fps in 2x the res. And the music keeps speeding up and slowing down. :(

Anti-aliasing is always a performance hit. But bear in mind you don't need to render at *full* HD resolution. If you do it at half your native resolution, it should still scale nicely to your display.

Can you run Wii and GC games straight from the disks?

Seems to support it, though I've not tried it.

Interestingly it seems to work with the backups I made using the Homebrew Channel as well, though emulation can be hit and miss. (It doesn't seem to like The Godfather- Blackhand Edition, No More Heroes sound was a bit off, and predicatably, Animal Crossing seemed to work perfectly)

I'll give it a go, I've had SMG2 since release and have hardly played it.

I take it we're not allowed to post links to ISO's? GC ISO's are really easy to get hold of if people want to give this a go.
