I go out of my way carve out as much time as possible without hindering family responsibilities, work, health, fitness etc. Which isn't a huge amount compared to my youth for sure but still enough to fully embrace the hobby.

And for a long time there has been more that I want to play than I can ever find the time for so most the time I'm spoilt for choice.

And I absolutely still get hyped for news and new releases.

This.

This.

However, a few games I do buy on the release day, but I can wait as I know they will become available later on PS+ or a cheaper price which isn't a problem for me.

It’s always worth reading the whole quote. CS Lewis was a smart man.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

its always worth knowing the whole quote, god almighty who rules above us all is a smart man

Yeah, but what came first, Eden or Narnia?

This is also an issue i have, most days i have barely an hour of so to play a game.

Mind you, i used to love Call of Duty multiplayer, but found over the years that with each installment that the prices got higher, the file sizes became beig enough to take over a hard drive, the battle royale format they introduced sucked, and even on the normal multiplayer, the maps and combat felt inferior compared to earlier games. For me, the magic had gone, and it's doubtful i will return to the series anytime soon.

Though i admit, I will always have fond memories of someone with a Manchester accent (why was it always Manchester where the abusive shouty comments came from? I never quite understood that) calling me a 'forkin camper'

As the world around me gets scarier and responsibilities get heavier, having a source of escapism becomes more and more important. I'm playing more games than ever. They're often shorter because I have more money (I recognise this is a privileged position) but less time for gaming. Nintendo's embracing indies on Switch has also helped with that.

I hate a lot of modern gaming developments: loss of mid-tier gaming, decline of local multiplayer, new ways of gouging out money and yes, the screamy streamer. But I love a lot of others: the rise of the indie scene, hybrid consoles, indie revivals of favourite genres, the growth of gaming communities on Discord. Parts of gaming are leaving me behind but other parts are embracing me.

Games are good innit.

Resi 4 Remake was an eye-opener for me last year. It was my GOTY because 1. not much has changed gameplay-wise in its genre for 20 years, and 2. its pacing and ambition seems alien to today’s AAA approach.

Yesterday I finished FF7 Rebirth and while I enjoyed it, there was so much padding. If I hadn’t invested so much time already, I probably would’ve given up at the Cait Sith box throwing section. 86 hours is too much and I’m reluctant to revisit Infinite Wealth for the same reason.

Tldr - single player games haven’t changed a lot in the past 15-20 years but increasingly they seem absolutely enormous and not particularly well-paced.

I’m older, so I have less time, but games seem to give less respect to the time I have.

I love them more now than since I was in my early teens.

I still love gaming and probably always will, but I couldn't give a gooseberry fool about stuff like twitch streamers, tech specs of consoles and online multiplayer.

However, I spend less time gaming due to having other interests and hobbies these days that I enjoy equally as much.

I still love gaming.

Not all of the time, of course. Big business, increasing prices, perhaps less variety (at least at an AAA level), unfinished games and online hate. Ugh. But even though these aspects chip away at gaming, it can still be wonderful. I buy far less but play more and that is probably a good thing.

Games are too big and my time is too scarce. I find myself playing games on easier difficulty settings with no interest in being completionist about it. I'd rather play it, enjoy it and move on. I have recently put a fair amount of time into Starfield, which has been ok, and I'm currently on Diablo 4 and Jedi Survivor, both of which seem decent.

That said, both my boys are right into Nintendo and I get a lot of pleasure from seeing them discover games, and from playing them with them.

I don't get the same pure joy from games I got when I was a kid but that's fine. I've gone through phases or liking or not liking games a lot. I'm experiencing a relative lull in interest at the moment but I'm sure it'll come back, and I'll definitely still get hyped for certain big new releases like Tears of the Kingdom. Having people to talk about games with and the social aspect of multiplayer games is increasingly a factor into why I'm still gaming.

This is a great point and one that I can relate to; talking and sharing stuff about gaming here and on Twitter / Discord / YouTube is a big factor as to why I still have gaming as a hobby.

Everything in the 80s, 90s and 00s was new. From smashing up a car to feeling a controller rumble; storming the beaches of Normandy to seeing a man kicking a ball, it had never been done before. You’ll never be able to capture or relive that magic ever again because the core mechanics of playing a video game probably plateaued in the PS2 era.

The social aspect has also likely changed with age: whether you were playing with your mates from school or recreating Men Behaving Badly in your living room, that’s probably gone now as well.

Gaming was all about new experiences. This is where I feel VR, AR or something along those lines could be it, but the technical and pricing hurdles haven’t been overcome yet.

If you're losing interest, you were never a real gamer. A gamer is for life, not just the holidays.

This. It always feels like such an undertaking starting a bigger game, especially when there's other things competing for my time. Still enjoy gaming and thankfully don't feel the need to be playing the latest releases which makes a big difference. Will happily wait for those deep discounts!

I still love games and I probably play more (in quantity) than ever before thanks to having more disposable income and thanks to playing more shorter indie titles. Some of my favourite games of all time have released in more recent years and I still feel like I'm playing new experiences and seeing new ideas.

I'm not really into streamers or live service games, but I don't think those things are necessary to engage with to be into games. It's a hugely broad medium that probably never was a monoculture but is certainly continuing to diversify.

ill tell you what, the last month or so i bought a steam deck, and have really enjoyed playing a few games on that - which led me to firing up the ps5 the last couple of weeks and trying out some games on that

maybe console gaming is the answer, maybe you guys were right all along, computers are for work

I love a good single-player experience, but for me peak gaming was local multiplayer. Sleepovers with a bunch of friends sat up playing Perfect Dark all night, that sort of thing, which is essentially impossible once you're an adult with traditional adult responsibilities. So the maximum level of joy has been reduced. Online multiplayer with unknown people appeals to me so little, and even online play with friends simply isn't the same.
