You know what game I mean.

My thoughts exactly.

I assume all the DLC for Amnesia and Killing Floor is available even if you didn't get the games through the tattie sack?

This potato/ARG thing took time and resources away from Half Life 3?

It was. I don't know if it still is.

edit: The Justine expansion for Amnesia still appears to be available in the game launcher.

Maybe not that specifically but I do feel that Valve are taking resources away from the development of the next Half Life game for other stuff which is rather annoying as I know the next Half Life game will be amazing but the wait is becoming ridiculous.

I think Valve have the money and resources to fund a mission to Mars without taking anything away from HL3.

Half Life 3 is the new Duke Nukem Forever.

I just feel sorry for the poor console owners like me who have to wait until tomorrow to play Portal 2. :(

This marketing wheeze, though, was great. The major flaw was that it barely affected the game's unlock time. But strawberry float it, we all make mistakes.

Well... maybe not Mars. But definitely the moon.

In fairness, the people to which they've given a complete bundle are the people most likely to already own everything. And it's non giftable. So it's not exactly much of a risk.

They're giftable.

Still not much of a 'risk' per se, but I think that's a gesture that can be classed as going well above and beyond what's reasonably expected of them.

What really impressed me is that Valve didn't just promote it's own title this way, but went so far as to use their pre-release hype to promote a number of indie titles.

Absolutely. This isn't just about Half--Life or Portal - they've managed to simultaneously promote the release of one of the biggest games of the year while at the same time boosting the coffers of a number of indie developers along the way. While giving a load of games away to their most avid fans. Ridiculous, really.

You should sell that copy of CS:S to whoever that clown is on mumble that doesn't have CS:S.

He's still got it as well.

And once again, how long did it take you to rule all the potatoes, and in the darkness bind them?

Ok, that's an incredibly nice gesture. I was obviously misinformed about the gifting status.

The thing is that there's an associated "loss" of potential sales.

Fortunately, the quality of the games is such that it seems like those "promotional" copies will bring in more fans (and thus sales) than would be lost.

I had zero potatoes on Friday at 5pm, and 36 potatoes on Monday morning at 2am. I may have sacrificed some hours of sleep along the way. But nearly all of the challenges were fun in their own way, and it got me playing a load of smaller games I'd been meaning to check out for a while now - hadn't touched stuff like Amnesia and AaAaAA!!! before, and am now very glad I own them.

Cogs can strawberry float right off though. :shifty:

When you consider the amount of effort that went into every single bit of Portal 2, even how well the ARG marketing ties into the game, and how brilliantly Valve are as a company in general, I honestly can't think of a single reason why anyone would want Episode 3 now. If Valve don't think it's ready, then I simply do not want to play it.

TAKE YOUR TIME, GABEN!

It's just sort of annoying that it was supposed to be episodic and episode 1 came out June 2006 followed by episode 2 in October 2007 and now the wait is well over 3 years for any information at all about the conclusion to the story.

Like other Half-Life 2 episodes, Episode Three will likely follow the adventures of Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance. Parts of the episode will probably be set farther north, possibly in Arctic conditions. Valve has said that they intend for each episode to highlight a major new feature or gameplay design element. In Episode One, this was the interaction with a well developed NPC, along with full implementation of the Source's HDR lighting system. In Episode Two, this was creating large outdoor environments, high scale battles previously unseen in the Source engine, performance and rendering enhancements to the Source engine to accommodate multi-core processor architecture and a new cinematic physics system to create large physics-based events. According to a video involving Gabe Newell and two interpreters discussing deafness and video games with a small audience of hearing impaired people, it seems that part of Episode Three's new gameplay and new Source engine features will include a deaf character and that the game will include better support for hearing-impaired players.

They probably have a longer single player campaign in store for episode 3 thus will probably want to implement something new to the game that may be fairly complex, which is why it may be taking a good while. Obviously not just what has been speculated in the above paragraph.
