I'm off to see this tonight but after reading the comments in here I'm convinced I'm going to end up absolutely hating them pissing all over 40 odd years of Trek history.

I want to like it, but I also want to hate it.

I already explained that one. It was the Kelvin's emblem, and George Kirk's heroic act to save 800 lives led to it becoming the Starfleet emblem prematurely. In the standard timeline it is possible that Starfleet re-used emblems once ships were decomissioned, and that could have led to James Kirk ending up with Enterprise.

It's all about expectations - as an actually "reboot" it's actually fairly good, but as a film it's got a couple of issues.

Go in expecting a good(ish) generic action summer blockbuster and you'll be fine (you may ever be surprised how well it meets that).

Go in expecting an amazing cerebral/plot/character driven Star Trek film...and you'll be disappointed.

Also expect a film that's so busy setting up it's new reality/setting, that it's own plot suffers for it - the next film without that hampering (and a better action director who's not shakeycam obsessed...even in CGI :P) could be amazing.

Someone on rllmuk said it really well:

All in all I think much like Favreau did in Iron man.. Abrams did a good job casting and setting up the new movie world for films to take place in.. But just didnt have the chops as a director to do anything new/GREAT with it.

So how come all this stuff bothers you more than the time travel being completely broken, Hexx?

Eh? Other than the obvious issue of black holes somehow doubling as time portals, what was wrong with the time travel?

It's all circular.

Nero hasn't even been born yet, the young spock can prevent both the destruction of Romulus from a supernova 120 years later and make sure Nero doesn't go back in time, etc, which should reset the timeline completely.

Except it was explicitly stated in the film that Nero's trip created an divergent, alternate reality. Everything that follows takes place in a parallel universe to the one we're used to.

It's not circular, because it didn't "change the timeline" - it created an Alternate Reality - they said this in the film.

Nicely side stepped that issue of time paradox.

But that means he didn't just go back in time, he created a new reality and essentially hopped dimensions. :?

So basically, the destruction would have been prvented, but only in this new timeline.

Parallel universes in Star Trek are based on the idea that every choice ever made creates a new reality for each possible outcome. According to that theory, even you and I create hundreds every day, with alternate yous running around all over the multiverse. :P

But yes, to all extents and purposes this is a new Star Trek universe, one where George Kirk died without ever seeing his son, and one where Vulcan was destroyed. It's also one where Chris Pine doesn't grow up to become William Shatner.

No. They're right, I think. Allow me explain with The Shittest Diagram Ever.

Image

(The blue line is Nero. The point at which Nero 'jumps' is also the point of the creation of Bizzaro World).

So strawberry floated Time Spock can do all he wants. It's not the Nero born in his universe who comes back in time to destroy Vulcan, it's the one from the Normal timeline.

I think.

And where Chris Pike is much older. And doesn't have an attractive Yeoman.

I'm so hot for you right now.

But I think your diagram lines should be linked until the point where Nero "lands" - when it makes to branches. One were Romulus explodes and the new one :)

I see. Then it's the nero from the left branch that comes back I suppose. That makes sense.

I'm glad it's not broken. I still love it.
