my sister got a netbook a couple of months ago and really hates the fact that she can't change her desktop.

As far a i know, Windows 7 Starter edition comes with one desktop background, which can't be changed.

Why the hell wouldn't MS allow all editions to change their desktop backgrounds?

Starter Edition has always been portrayed as a very limited-functionality version specifically designed for netbooks and other low-powered PCs.
The features are limited to ensure a reasonable quality of experience, despite the low hardware specs.

How much would it really hurt to allow for a change of desktop background?

then your options are:
1.Install a higher version of windows, if your pc can handle it.
2. Install a linux os. (ubuntu)
3.keep your internet browser open on full screen
4. Hell if i know

You can get programs that can change it, but they do it so you upgrade it.

Wondering if you guys could possibly help with a problem:

There's a laptop in the house. Usually it's the only PC on the network, but when other people come to the house and use the WiFi the lappy gets a "local connection only" problem.

My first though was an IP conflict, and when I tried IPCONFIG, I found that the laptop's IP is totally different to what it should be, i.e. the gateway is 192.168.1.1 and the IP it assigns itself is 169.*.*.*

I've fixed this by telling it not to auto assign an IP and manually input the settings, but I'm not very happy with the solution. Any ideas?

On a slightly related note: Don't you just hate those PCs with like, 435 start up programs, every single browser toolbar you can possibly imagine and worse, Norton bloody Antivirus on them?

Such a pain in the backside.

Isn't 169... used automatically if Windows can't get an address from DHCP? Can you try various other wireless devices and see if they interfere as well, or is it always the same persons laptop?

And shouldn't this be in Ask The Forum, where it'll get more exposure?

Yeah, I put it in there as well.

Since coming to this house though, I've had 2 android devices and a laptop and they all work just fine.

I've got a couple of SSDs recently and was talking about them with a mate and he recommended I read this article.

It's quite long but is actually really interesting and makes you feel like a boffin when you understand it all.

The thing is that it's such a basic feature, there are people who will upgrade Windows simply to change the desktop background.

I never change my background I don't see the point as I rarely ever see it.

I'm still on the default Windows 7 background myself.

Do you guys recommend any software to monitor PC temperatures/fan speeds etc? When I play a demanding game, the fans in my PC sound like they're working themselves to death so I wanna make sure there's nothing wrong.
