I think they're both great shows, but I think maybe Gervais and Merchant make things a little too bleak - I appreciate bleakness too, but it's nice to have a bit of hope as well. Michael Scott is a more rounded character than David Brent. Also, the US version has countless episodes and a range of writers to draw on while the UK version is basically two blokes. Wow, that's a long-winded way of saying I'm sitting on the fence!

Extras is pretty terrible though.

I sat down and watched both series of the UK version a month or so ago and loved it. I'd never seen all of the episodes before, but I really liked it. Such hilarious moments and Brent is a genius character.

Didn't think much of the US version though. Granted I've only seen a few episodes, but it was just too loud and annoying. I don't like Steve Carrel at all either. What I liked about the UK one was it's cringyness and like someone said earlier "bleakness". The US one seemed too much like a comedy, although I don't recall laughing. I never felt the cringyness in Carrels character either. I'll have to watch the first season though, give it another try.

I agree with this, people have a tendency to be drawn in by bleak stories that try to do a good job of telling you that life is actually pretty gooseberry fool.

I thought the UK Office did this a bit too much and David Brent was just too unlikeable for me. Yeah that was the point but it was too much most of the time.

I'd go as far to say that the US Office is better in every way apart from the documentary aspect of the original which doesn't make a lot of sense anymore after four years in the remake.

Oh and don't start with the first season of the remake, start with S2 and watch the first six episode after finishing every other episode.

I appreciate the UK version more, but I'd watch the US version over it. Does that make any sense?

The best part of The Office is that it's set in Slough.

Clack the lank. All the photos are just basically taking the piss out of Slough.

Sexcellent show. UK >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>. US though. I really don't think the Americans quite get the idea of The Office.

That's because it's not like the UK version any more, it started off as an exact replica but it found it's own style and it's worked. Also Dwight > all

When I first watched The Office, I'd yet to have the wonderful experience that is office work, but I still found it utterly superb. It got funnier with every episode, as you get to know the characters better, and at the same time you find yourself caring about them too. Both the end of season 2, and the end of the specials brought a tear to my eye, for rather different reasons. Amazing show, and by far the best thing Gervais and Merchant are ever likely to do.

The UK Office is still king for me, even though I've been seriously getting into the American version of late.

It's unfair to directly compare and contrast as they're now completely different beasts.

Strangely, I've been watching my way through the US version recently. The UK version is obviously superior, but the US version is still very good and makes some interesting choices. I think it explores some of the characters much better than the UK one. Dwight is a weak link, far too often being too 'out there' to be funny, but the way it explores why Jim torments him so much makes Jim into a pretty sad character at times which is pretty brave. Plus, the UK version is largely carried by Brent in a way that the US's isn't carried by Michael.

The UK is a better show, but I think the US is more rounded.

it explore some of the characters better? You cant compare character exploration between the 2. The show's characters arent the same.

I thought that about Dwight at the start but he becomes probably the funniest character in it.
The US and UK Office are both very good at different things, the US version is funnier and I've gotten more enjoyment out of it (though there are like 5 times as many eps) but it's definitely the UK version that will be remembered in 50 years time, if that even means anything.

The greatest TV show of all time. Easily.

Speaking of Gervais, I enjoyed his impression of the awful Only Fools and Horses:

Gervais: "Rodney! What the bkllhjh! GRANDAD HAS GONE AND gooseberry fool 'IMSELF AGAIN! RODNEY YOU FUUUUCCCCCKKKING AHRRHHRHRHRHRHRHHRHRHHHRHRHRHRHRHRHKDSHKHDSKJHDSKH".

Merchant: "What episode was that in, again?"
