To be fair railings like that are meant to be greased and yes it's a kind of nylon wheel (hard and low friction) on a metal runner. It could also be ball bearings which should be really smooth. If one of the runners have come off, then yeah the door is basically just held there by gravity and the other rail and rolls along the floor directly. Which is awkward to use.

Works a similar way to sliding shower doors or drawers actually but width ways rather than depth.

If the runner wasn't missing there would be basically no friction or rumble. The door was probably too heavy for the fixings for the runner and it fell out. Or the screws were stripped when it was fitted.

Badly fitted fitted wardrobe. I have one. I don't live with anyone else but it barely makes any noise. Eventually vibration could run out some screws.

Shame the rail is missing as it might be hard to find another one but if you were to make a fitted wardrobe with sliding doors from scratch then they have to come from somewhere. Might be worth getting i touch with a cabinet maker or carpenter that makes them from scratch. They'll have catalogues for that stuff. And replace both rails so the door isn't running along the floor.

If however the door runs along a channel that is affixed directly to the floor you might be out of luck. Come to think of it I think mine does work like that.

It strawberry floating pisses me off when homeowners loose parts like that. They just take the odds and sods with them that they could never get around to fixing, so then you have a home with parts missing and are eternally doomed to this or that dodgy fitting.

Thank you Green Gecko. You seem to have a lot of knowledge on this type of furniture fitting. Really appreciate the variation that this type of wardrobe could be.
I do believe the wheels are cast wheels as one of the previous lodgers she had described them to me. I just hope they were not designed to run along along a channel directly fixed to the floor.

Well she's said I could go up and have a look so will take some photos and then get in touch with some sort of carpenter. I'm sure some after market solution could be found. I would be will to help pay for it even though I shouldn't but for the sake of her corporation and peace I will offer. Do you reckon I should help pay towards it?

A quick google and I already come across one such repair company furnituremend.co.uk
They even have a section on their website dedicated to repairing sliding wardrobe doors on site. Seems too good to be true as it's exactly what I'm after. And they are London based which is perfect.

I wouldn't help pay for it as it's solely their responsibility, but they also don't need to fix it so I'd consider a nice bottle of wine or something as a thank you gift for when it's done, to be neighborly.

One of my neighbours has been making noise all day and, as we approach midnight, they're still going. It's just talking but I dunno how anyone can talk so loud or for so long. I'm laying in bed and I can hear them talking; not the actual words but a pretty constant droning.

And so right now I'm looking at Amazon for ear plugs; silicon plastic ones that will cut out the noise.

I used to have this issue at my last house - it wasn't elevated voices or anything, she was just a real foghorn.

Anyway the answer is a big oscillating fan. The noise / vibration / resonance whatever is such that it is brilliant for drowning out just about any low noise. Put it between you and the source of noise.

You also get used to it (white noise) and it actually becomes incredibly relaxing in its own right.

I bought a white noise machine which is ok, but it does not have the depth of frequency to work the magic, so when the problem rears it's ugly head again (currently a generator some distance away for night roadworks) - out comes the fan again and the problem is solved. Cheap as chips to run also.

my neighbour's tumble dryer hum, which was annoying as strawberry float cos it was 4-5-6 hours a day, was drowned out by the extractor fan in my bathroom.

Thanks, chaps. The white noise effect! I am susceptible to noise and I am much more comfortable when things are quiet. Unfortunately the neighbours making the noise are downstairs from me. I don't know what they're saying (the guys have ridiculously deep voices and aren't using English) and it may be a cultural/upbringing thing but they talk so loudly; it sounds like they are constantly shouting.

I have ordered some cheap ear plugs to see if that will help.

Thanks! Are you sure they don't have to fix it? surely they can't create such disturbance to neighbours. I mean I could even film a glass of water vibrating vibrate as evidence but luckily don't need to go that far.

A pizza in France sounds like a nice treat lol

I mean, you could possibly argue that they are legally obligated to take reasonable measures as to ensure they aren't causing unnecessary disturbance, you'd have to dig through legislation to find that though.

What I mean is they don't have to be so accommodating. They could easily make your life difficult over this. Like if they had said "go strawberry float yourself mate", yeah you might have a legal standing but good luck enforcing it.

The older I get the more I realize being in the right doesn't matter.

A guy downstairs has been "singing" for the past two-and-a-half hours. By "singing", I mean wailing/whining/moaning and, seemingly, yodelling.

I am looking foward to my earplugs being delivered.

You're already anticipating it. Probably heightening your anxiety and frustration around the noise. You live beside people, they are going to make noise.

The only solution is to buy your own sledgehammer and petrol-powered leaf blower.

Jawa, please buy yourself some noise cancelling headphones. I always recommend the Soundcore series. Q30 or Q45 depending on budget. It will be the best investment you ever make.
