What is the JET programme, and how does one apply?

It's basically a year out in Japan working as an assistant to an Japanese English teacher in Japanese schools. You don't need a teaching qualification or be able to speak Japanese, all you need is a degree or finish your degree in the same year as you depart. You get paid 3.6 million yen a year, which is currently about £27,000 but out of that you must pay health insurance, rent, pension contributions ect. but you will still have plenty to live off. You tend to be placed in more rural areas rather than places such as Tokyo or Yokohama as the idea behind the scheme is to 'promote international understanding', something you will find more of in a city rather than a village.

I saw a poster for this JET thing at my university a few weeks ago, honestly though Japan seems like it might be interesting to visit, I'd love to go explore all those crazy abandoned buildings, but I'd never want to live there. It seem far too crowded, but maybe that's just because most of what we see is the cities.

At any rate, 4 assignments due next week, 2 of them are due on Monday.

That's alright I'm only in fourth year, I wouldn't be applying until next year anyway.

That's awesome though, I'm totally up for doing that next year. If you get in, when do you leave to go over there?

Late July/Early August. Need to first be accepted for an interview and then accepted to be an ALT. Think there will be only 200 places with perhaps 50-80 people applying per place? Still, would be great if me and Pacman got accepted, isn't that right Staydead?
