I don't understand why some of you on here think it's a bad thing for people to be entertained by things. It's almost as if you take offense that there are people out there who like things that you don't. Are you a bunch of joyless snobs or are you just stupid?

I don't take offense to simple people, I feel sorry for them.

If you think that being able to find enjoyment in more 'basic' forms of entertainment alludes to a simpler mind then you might need to start feeling sorry for yourself.

I'll probably end up buying it either though after reading his other books it's clear they're all exactly the same. If an ally in this new one doesn't turn out to be the evil mastermind I'll be shocked.

I'm tempted as Waterstones have it for half price and as Hexx said it's entertaining tosh that'll entertain me for a week or so.

If you like Dan Brown, fine, good for you. I don't think anyone is going to lose sleep over that.

...but in a thread about Dan Brown, it's only natural that some people are going to point out that he is an awful writer, clichéd and predictable. If I made a thread about the Spice Girls' new album and how good it is, I'd expect plenty of facepalms. This is pretty much the same thing.

I'm not a big reader of fiction. But there are plenty of books you can turn your brain off with, including (which some would disagree with) most of the Sherlock Holmes books, especially the later short stories, where Doyle had clearly lost his mind.

Dan Brown is the new Stephen King. Take of that what you will.

So, is this book any better than his previous stuff, or is it more of the same?

With revisionist history like that, you must be Dan Brown. It wasn't people not liking it that seemed to annoyed the thread it was the meladramatic pontificating ( paraphrasing "You people are the cause of decline of literature" )

Anyway £9 in Sainsburys. I spent more on the bottle of wine I'm having while reading it - so don't feel guilty for ruining modern literature.

Aparantly its only £5, but thanks to Tesco Clubcard vouchers picked it up from there instead for £7.

Will probably pick it up tomorrow at some point...

Got it, and have read the first 30 pages. It's okay so far, interesting but nothing has really happened yet. It sounds a bit typical though, a kidnapping and I keep thinking I have guessed who the bad guy will be.

For the record, I don't think that they are the downfall of literature. The more people reading, the better. Even if it's trash.

That was...odd.

There's some good trashy thriller bits, but there's some horrid existential crap - and there's about 5 chapters to many after the final.

While the baddie wasn't the same pattern as previos books, it's still fairly obvious.

I think it suffers from the Masons not being as widely known or "mysterious/legendary" as say the Holy Grail or Illuminati.

Finished last night, overall a good read

Better than Da Vinci, on par with Angels and Demons. The amount of copycat books on the market after Da Vinci was released really dumbed down most aspects of the book, and when linked with the fact the Masons mean nothing to me it definitely didn't have that "OMG Jesus is alive" moment that Da Vinci gave us.

This made me laugh considering The Da Vinci is itself a copycat book. Dan Brown fans, do yourselves a favour and read this Foucault's Pendulum. It has more original ideas in one paragraph than all of Dan Brown's collective writing.
