It's only for the Confederations Cup and it's a tribute to the World Cup winning sides of the 1930s.

There's an article on the Times that details all the transfers during Benitez's time at Anfield.

Total gross spend: £191.309m
Total recouped: £109.51m
Total net spend: £81.799m
Players signed: 70
Players sold or let go: 72

That seems like a staggering turnover of players in 5 years.

Take reserve players who barely played a game for the first team and were bought/left for free out of that and it paints a slightly different picture really.

Net spend of £82m over 5 years is £16.4m a season which isn't a great deal.

And they've listed players as leaving that are actually still at the club   .

How odd, they have his name down as Mikel San Jose when they signed him but San Jose Dominguez when released.

I don't think its a particularly negative article either way. The vast majority of the transfers are for youth players who didn't work out and there are an awful lot of Houllier signings that that just ranout their contracts. Still shouldn't have sold Pongolle though.

We got a decent price for Pongolle in the end though.

Firstly, remember, DML told us that "There was no way we could afford him."

And secondly, £17m for a right back we don't really need :fp: .

I'd much rather spend it on a creative match winner.... which is what we need.

I disagree stigsy, I think Arbeloa had a shocking season so Glen Johnson would be most welcome. Especially if arbeloa goes for 8m to real AND the fact that portsmouth still owe us 7m for crouch makes it a bargain really!

He hasn't had a shocking season at all.

We had the third best defence in the league.

We would have won it had we had a match winner to turn 0-0s into wins.

He offers nothing going forward. Last season he lost the ball and gave posession away tons of times, so many times in fact that we could have ended up creating from them had he not misplaced his passes.

I suppose this is when it starts to really hit home with Newcastle fans when they can't find their club info easily available anymore...

The decision in the end was correct. If the Egyptian defender hadn't tried to cheat and con the referee I might have more sympathy for them.

Morecambe have drawn Preston again in the League Cup. Hopefully another case of claiming a Championship scalp.

Good on Webbe, use of video replays turns out to actually work and he's being atacked because of it. Egypt are just throwing toys out of the pram. At the end of the day, however it was made, the correct decision was given. Further proof that we should be using video replays for incidents such as this. I'll concede that a dodgy tackle is down to interpretation sometimes but things as clear cut as offsides, handballs etc. should be done by video.

Martinez has finally joined Wigan
Knew it was going to happen but seeing the press conference i miss him already.

Apparently there is a 6 man short list
Gary Speed
Aidy Boothroyd
Paul Tisdale
Gus Poyet
?
?

But we will also need an assistant manager and a head scout as wigan got them as well.

On a positive, Swansea have a home draw against Brighton in the 1st round of the Carling Cup!!!!
