Star Trek Into Darkness Villian Edition turned up today. Don't think I'll be opening that one.

I just bought this bad boy...

The World At War - The Ultimate Restored Edition (Blu Ray)
9 disks, over 12 hours of additional materials, digitally remastered footage. Almost certainly the best televisual history of World War II ever made.

Cal in the Literature Thread wrote:Currently reading William L Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (pub. 1960). Absolutely fascinating - and a huge tome of a book (well over 1000 pages).

Previous to this, I read all three volumes of David J Evans' The Third Reich Trilogy (pub. 2003-08).

The story of how and why the Nazi's came to power (and their catastrophic collapse) is intriguing - a warning from history, to be sure, and never quite as uncomplicated or simplistic as some might have you believe. Shirer's history is perhaps more 'entertaining' than Evans', but both go into intricate detail, covering all aspects of the 'thousand year Reich' - how it was created, maintained and eventually squandered, etc. Chilling histories, I feel every modern politician should be forced to read both titles as a precondition to admittance into elected Parliamentary life.

New hobby Cal? ;)

Yep - decided I really should educate myself about exactly what happened before, during and after WWII. I am especially interested in the rise and fall of The Third Reich.

I decided to get The World At War set because I remembered having watched some of them on TV as a young kid and figured that since the whole series has now been lovingly restored for a Blu Ray release now would be as good a time as any to watch the whole series again as an adult, especially given my reading habits of late!

I remember my dad loving the World at War series but have never watched it myself. The whole period is interesting though, I will have to check that series out one day.

That layout makes it look like a big smiling face, I don't recall WW II being particularly funny.

Apparently, they've cropped the picture of this version to make it 16:9 :dread:

So beautiful!

P.S. Buy them quick before Disney put their stamp on them. They have already started doing it in America :fp:

It shouldn't happen over here as Studio Canal have the distribution rights in this country.

Nice as some of those steelbooks are, I'm not sure that nicer boxes can justify an £8.50 extra price increase over the standard versions.

EDIT - The Ponyo one is £11 more than the standard Bluray on Amazon.
