Waterworld: Extended Edition (R1):

Universal Home Video has announced an extended edition of Waterworld which stars Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper. The 2-disc release will be available to own from the 4th November, and should retail at around $19.98. Both the extended version (2 Hours 57 Minutes) and theatrical version (2 Hours 16 Minutes) will be presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. The only confirmed extra feature right now is the trailer. Stay tuned for further details.

I guess that even after 13 years, they're still trying to cover the costs of making the film in the first place!

The film seems to have a bad reputation, largely due to its budget problems, but it is enjoyable, and certainly not a complete wash out.

I'm still interested in seeing the extended cut to see if it makes a difference.

Disney Classics Coming to BluRay

What with the Labor Day weekend, there appears to be nothing at all happening in Tinseltown, so about the most exciting news out there at the moment is the fact that Disney plans to release some of its classic films on Blu Ray in the next couple of years.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 and Beauty and the Beast will all get the Blu-ray treatment, following the release of Sleeping Beauty in October. Disney will also release the 1946 curiosity Destino, produced by Walt Disney and Salvador Dali but left unfinished until Roy Disney completed it in 2003.

As of autumn 2009, you'll also be able to access the worldwide "BD-Live" Disney network, allowing you to use chatrooms and video messaging while watching the films. Which is nice and everything, but not entirely necessary. Still, it looks like between now and the end of 2010 there'll be lots from the House of Mouse to keep us entertained.

Exact Info on the INCREDIBLE HULK DVD/Blu-ray Deleted Scenes

A few days ago, Universal announced “The Incredible Hulk” would be arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on October 21st. While the announcement had plenty of info about featurettes and extras, the press release didn’t provide any clarification about how many deleted scenes would be included.

When I interviewed Director Louis Leterrier for the theatrical release, he mentioned that he wanted to include about 70 minutes of deleted scenes on the Blu-ray/DVD. So when I got the press release, I figured they’d mention how much additional footage fans could look forward to. When I wasn’t provided the info, I went digging.

I have some good and bad news for all of you.

The good is that fans will get almost 44 minutes of deleted scenes! But only if you buy the Blu-ray edition. If you don’t have the HD format yet…the 3rd disc of the 3-disc collection will have 28:47 of deleted scenes. As you can tell, the bad news is if you don’t go Blu-ray, you’ll be missing a lot of extra footage.

Here’s the actual breakdown of what footage is on each edition:

* On the Hulk bonus disc (part of the 3 disc collection) there are 28:47 minutes of deleted scenes

* On the standard DVD, there are 13:19 minutes of deleted scenes

* On the Blu-ray version, there are 43:50 minutes of deleted scenes

With studios desperate to get people to switch to the Blu-ray format (so they will buy the same movies they already own all over again), this is probably the beginning of a trend. If I were a studio head, I’d make sure the HD version always had better extras, as it’s an easy way to get people on board the new format. Of course, not many movies have 70 minutes of deleted scenes in the vault.

While the large majority of consumers have yet to experience Blu-ray and 1080p playback at home, the ones that have know the difference. And as more and more people see what kind of a jump it is from DVD to Blu-ray, I’d imagine the format will keep gaining in popularity. And editions like this, with a lot more footage that fans never had a chance to see in theaters, is definitely going to help the format.

If I find out any more specifics about exactly what the deleted scenes consist of…expect an update. Again, “Incredible Hulk” hits DVD and Blu-ray October 21st.

Well, The Last House on the Left has finally be passed uncut by the BBFC. The uncensored version has always been available on DVD in the US, but this looks like a decent set for the R2 audience. I have the R1 disc but the extras look decent enough for a double dip, so we'll have to see:

In a nutshell. Two women get abducted by a gang, and are then tortured, raped and made to undergo a variety of demeaning tasks. It's worth seeing, especially if you have an interest in Grindhouse cinema (not Tarantino's fake variety), but it's really not as shocking as the BBFC's delay in releasing it uncut would suggest.

The current R2 version is cut, and the film was released theatrically in a censored form back in 1985. However, if you check the BBFC's website it states that a version of the film was passed uncut on the 11th of June 2007, so it might just be a matter of time before the UK gets a DVD release akin to the R1 version.
