I know, but at the time, there was no indication that this was how you do it, and i certainly wasn't the only one who got stuck at that point.

I never had a problem with this back in the day as I'd time the jumps just right to get through. However what I suspect I was really doing was pressing down while in the air at the top of the jump and holding it until the barrel went to the bottom, so unwittingly using it as intended but thinking the jumping was doing the work.

Can confirm after months of experiments, the jumping alone did NOT work.

Ruined my childhood. I'd spend hours jumping on that thing trying to get past it. I only beat Sonic 3 by doing it as S3&K and playing Knuckles who doesn't have that bit in his level.

Now I’m in my 40’s a good test of my dropped reaction time in gaming is that I can no longer complete any of the special stages on Sonic 3. Zero. Back in the day I finished S3&K with full Hyper Sonic on Doomsday Zone multiple times. Surely the crowning 16bit platformer?
