Doomsday Zone is still my favourite stage music from any Sonic game

How on earth have you managed that?! Are there even that many special stage rings in the first level?

I know, but at the time, there was no indication that this was how you do it, and i certainly wasn't the only one who got stuck at that point.

In fact, it was pretty notorious.

Ruined my childhood. I'd spend hours jumping on that thing trying to get past it. I only beat Sonic 3 by doing it as S3&K and playing Knuckles who doesn't have that bit in his level.

Now I’m in my 40’s a good test of my dropped reaction time in gaming is that I can no longer complete any of the special stages on Sonic 3. Zero. Back in the day I finished S3&K with full Hyper Sonic on Doomsday Zone multiple times. Surely the crowning 16bit platformer?

I had every single file completed with a variation of all the character combos with every single super emerald. Obviously some were doubled up to have every file completed but it was my proudest accomplishment as an 8 year old.

My younger brother deleted them all because he thought the animation of robotnik deleting them was funny. I don't think our relationship ever recovered from that.

As an aside those bonus levels make me feel sick now! Even with the higher framerates, I just can't do it.

Well he needed the chaos emeralds first, which were collected on a sonic 3 playthrough I imagine. There are 7 rings in Mushroom Hill, whether you count that as the "first" stage is another matter. ;)

Edit: hate that "super" emeralds are better than "chaos" emeralds, they sound way lamer.

Super Emeralds only become available once you reach S&K stages - so Mushroom Hill is the earliest point where you can get them :capnscotty:

Ah that makes sense, actually. I interpreted "first zone" as Jen playing S&K alone and collecting all 14 in one level, rather than the first zone the super emeralds are available in.

Dr. Robotnik doesn't want you to know this one simple trick.

Y'all just jealous of my mad blue balls skillz :datass:

But either way I stand by my point - Super Emeralds are only a thing that you can collect in S3&K, they don't exist as a gameplay mechanic in S&K alone and you can only get them by collecting the chaos emeralds before reaching Mushroom Hill - ergo collecting all 7 on that level constitutes the first zone where it's possible to unlock Hyper Sonic! :toot:

1 and 2 are the best. I like 3 but the introduction of Knuckles drags the game right down the rankings. Ditto Sonic Adventure 2 for introducing Shadow. Most of Sonics cast are pretty bland but I can't stand either Knuckles or Shadow. The All Star Racing games are great!

I do like the Sonic Master System games too and wish they got more recognition.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread
