I find Arrested Development funnier than Blackadder. But my comment was more on how there have been relatively few brilliant British sitcoms in the last twenty years or so.

Off the top of my head, Darkplace and Spaced.

The fourth series is my favourite, closely followed by the third. The less said about the first series the better.

You know, I actually quite like the first. It's far from perfect, but it's still fascinating to watch. I mean, it has freaking Brian Blessed in it, what more do you need?

Dr. Samuel Johnson: [places two manuscripts on the table, but picks up the top one] Here it is, sir. The very cornerstone of English scholarship. This book, sir, contains every word in our beloved language.
Blackadder: Every single one, sir?
Dr. Samuel Johnson: Every single word, sir!
Blackadder: Oh, well, in that case, sir, I hope you will not object if I also offer the Doctor my most enthusiastic contrafribularities.
Dr. Samuel Johnson: What?
Blackadder: "Contrafribularites", sir? It is a common word down our way.
Dr. Samuel Johnson: Damn!
[writes in the book]
Blackadder: Oh, I'm sorry, sir. I'm anispeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericombobulation.

I haven't seen 4 often enough, but used to know 2 and 3 like the back of my hand.

I like the Third the most for the Macbeth episode.

Can't think of any American sitcoms which better it tbh. Nobody does sarcasm better than the British and Rowan Atkinson is the ******* master.

 Brilliant.
I enjoy Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder far, far more than his Mr Bean stuff.

Blackadder; Is this the home of the wise woman?
Old crone; That it be , that it be
Blackadder; Yes it is, not that it be, I'm not a tourist
Old Crone; Two things ye should know about the wise woman, first she is wise, second she is...
Blackadder; A woman?
Old crone; So you do know her then?
Blackadder; Just a wild stab in the dark, which is what youll be getting if you dont tell me where she is...

It's probably the best written sitcom. It's hysterically funny and we will never see anything like it again as a lot of modern comedy shows aim for cheap gags or visual shocks (Little Britain) to get cheap nasty laughs. With Blackadder, it was all down to the acting & a superb script.

I've been a fan of Blackadder since the 80's and before Christmas last year, Dave did a special on Blackadder that included cast & crew interviews and lots of unseen behind-the-scenes footage. It was excellent. I don't think I'll ever delete it from my V+ box!

It's all in the delivery and Atkinson is the master.

I always thought that was a deliberate part of the episode, as you couldn't say 'strawberry float' on the BBC in those days.

It was.The whole point of the joke is you know what she means, and it being completely out of character.
