If Kyle wasn't send back, then John would not exist anyway. But he does exist anyway.

So just forget all about this bullshit and enjoy the movies. But I can't help myself wondering how it is possible in the first place. :x

To be honest it never occured to me during the film, it was only afterward that the thought entered my mind and made my brain melt.

Timeline change, so while Reese had to be sent back before to impregnate Sarah...that may no longer be the case as the current Kyle Reese is different to the one in T1.

Which is probably why Skynet didn't kill Reese, maybe it knew that Conner in that timeline wouldn't die.

Changing timelines is rubbish (but had to happen when we got past Judgement Day!). I prefer Losts "whatever happened happened" style of time travel.

I do remember hearing on the radio when it was Judgement Day though. As I was bored shitless at work, I was hoping for the nukes to fall. :D

Edit:

Judgement Day was originally August 29, 1997. Bloody hell it's been a long time since I was at school/unemployed. :(

More scary is:

Skynet sends back a terminator to kill John Connor who did NOT exist until the future John sent back Kyle Reese.

It's enough to send Stephen Hawking mad, foaming at the mouth and wheeling all over the place gibbering.

My theory is that somehow Skynet altered John Connor. John Connor does get born, but by sending a terminator back to kill Sarah Connor to prevent it from happening somehow forced an alternate version of John Connor but armed with even more knowledge.

It's the only way I can keep myself sane.

If you think about it both that John Connor and Skynet owe their existence to each other. Without Skynet sending Arnie back originally, John would not have been born. But Skynet would also not have been created (as we wouldn’t have had the futuristic chips & arms that were left by Arnie).

OMG! now it is literally a "chicken & egg" situation...

So which happened first!!!! No wait if what you say is true none of it would happen.

The bombs had to fall in any event, I think Skynet would have come into existence without the aid of the future technology, in T2 the head boffin states that the chip helped speed up development, skynet's creation was not dependent on it.

As Arnie stated, "it is inevitable" and T3 revolved around that certainty.

I think :P

Well, I think the original terminator that got destoryed speeded up the development of Skynet.

But still... *head explodes*

The Terminator was sent back to kill Sarah Conner, it's entirely possible that Kyle Reese wasn't John Conner's dad in that timeline.

When Skynet sent back the Terminator, both its and John Conner's future changed...the future that Reese was from ceased to exist in that timeline.

A new timeline/reality was created where the Terminator was the genesis for one version of Skynet and Reese was father to Conner.

The timeline changed again in T2, the John in the new timeline/reality was able to capture a T-800/T-101 and reprogram it because in his younger years he was pretty good at hacking/had quite a bit of knowledge when it came to computers. (note the John Conner from the T1 timeline wasn't able to do this, probably because Reese wasn't his father and his upbringing wasn't as bad as it was in T2)

That's my take on the timeline.

Every time someone/something travelled back in time, that timeline/reality ceased to exist/a new reality was created.

And, also, let's not forget, IT'S A strawberry floating TIME TRAVEL MOVIE.

Unless you're being taken back in time by a Delorean, your movie probably won't make any sense.
