Went to the hygenist today for maybe the first time ever (I'm an idiot) and she couldn't get all the grime off my teeth but got a hell of a lot off and the difference is insane. Some of my teeth have been basically brown forever and I always thought it was tea staining, but apparantly it was a load of grime that can't be brushed off since it's built up over too long.

Gotta go back next week, but other than nearly gagging a few times that wasn't all that bad. I'll definitely need to make sure I go more often.

I don't know why it surprises me, but I'm always amazed by the racism that some people are happy openly coming out with.

We had a guy come round to quote to replace some misted window panes, and while he's measuring up the windows, he comments on the building work next door, and the size of the extension going up, before turning to my wife and I and just asking "[racist term for south Asians goes here]?"

He read the immediate reaction from both of us, and mumbled a half apology before we could even say anything, but honestly, what the strawberry float goes through these people's heads? I've noticed it a lot since moving to the west midlands, there's plenty of people around here who assume because I'm white and they're white, then they're free to just be racist about all the Asian families that live round here, like they just expect solidarity in another white face. It makes me strawberry floating sick.

And now we've got to go and get someone else to come out and quote for window work, too.

Years ago me and my wife used to drink in a pub and got to know people in there. They weren't our best friends or anything, but we got to know them quite well and had some good laughs.

That pub closed down and a year or so later we went out for a drink in a different pub and there were some of the old crowd in there. While chatting, one of them just suddenly said "probably a good job the pub closed down, it was getting full of n***ers". He didn't even seem to notice that he'd said it in front of my (very obviously) black wife. When she said "what?" he went on about he was only talking about the bad ones.

I also remember not long after I met her we were out in some pub and she went up to the bar to get drinks. I bumped into an old school friend while she was up there paying and he asked who I was out with. I said "my girlfriend" and vaguely pointed towards the bar. And he said, "what? The darkie at the bar?".

TL:DR - people are banana splits.

It is vile, gives me a real sickness in my stomach.

I try to expose it in a casual, matter-of-fact way. Once I remember saying "Oh right, well, we don't really do racism". I hope the person was thoroughly embarrassed, but they probably just thought "Can't say anything these days".

I'm really sorry your wife and yourself has had to experience that kind of thing. I know family and others who partake in mild racism and I try to call that behaviour out where I can.

Kind of similar my Dad doesn't like homosexuals and my brother is dating another man. My Dad has never said anything to him but a few times when they have not been around he has made a few comments such as 'i wish he would meet a nice girl'

I was telling my mum the other week (he has never officially come out to my parents but they are official if that makes sense) that the reason he has never had that conversation is maybe because he was worried about the reaction.

It's no problem for me and my wife, they were people that were very easy to cut out of our lives and it was a long time ago now. It's just amazing how brazen people can be with their racism.

Your situation is far more serious, I just can't comprehend how a parent could be like that when their own child is involved. Hopefully things improve with your dad and he realises just what a twat he's being. If not, at least you are there for your brother.

Racism is one of the reasons I'm cutting my parents out of my life. The last incident I called them out on, they gaslit me to the point where I had to apologise for "misunderstanding" them. Horrible people and I can't abide it any longer.

I keep catching bits of Eastenders, and I can’t handle Alan Ford being in it. To me, he’s always this:

I have never bothered with a phone case.

But now I am very very tempted to get one.

The boss of Scottish beer giant Brewdog is to step down from his role as CEO of the company.
James Watt said he would move to a newly-created position of "captain and co-founder" and retain his shares in the company.
