Is it you nsm who has the expensive camera? It shows, lovely pics.

Anyway, already posted elsewhere but never mind. Taken on my Dad's D80 that he's letting me use.

How did you get the film effect nsm? The background blur looks very un-digital.

That's probably because I didn't do any noise removal which usually takes off the grainy film look that you get from using a high ISO (ISO 1600 in this case).

Deciding to actually get into photography proper I've just been taking photos of random gooseberry fool around my house. Badly.

Image

Looking at it I realise it would be a lot more interesting if the whole of his head was in focus, I used a faster shutter speed, and sorted out a little bit of the white balance.

Image

Could not for the life of me get the exposure right to make it look anything other than dull.

Thoughts?

I could really do with some really good guides or books to look out for at the library.

Need to go to the local gardens too for something good to photograph.

Really like your first and last shots Taf, they look like photos from the 70s for some reason. Very old school.

And nsm, haven't tried taking any panoramic shots yet; have yet to invest in a tripod after the camera emptied my savings. Also on the bokeh, that's some of the nicest digital bokeh I've seen; you've used a high ISO but normally it's splattered with subtle colour blotches.

....yuuuck.

Great pics though. What settings are generally best for landscape shots? My shots always seem to be out of focus aside from one very sharp point.

Ewww at that last pic, the great wall one is fantastic Ord.

Tafdolphin I really like the atmosphere and the dreamy look that the 50mm lens gives at f1.8, some absolutely amazing pictures there in those two batches especially the night life ones and the lanterns.

That part of America constantly blows me away. Half the reason for watching cowboy films for me is to see that stuff.

I'm a right camera noob. :(

The sun was just setting beautiful in my back garden and was bringing all the foliage to life. It looked great so of course, I wanted to take a picture. But I couldn't take a picture that captured how gorgeous it really looked. I played around with the exposure and the standard settings but didn't have any luck. Now the sun has set more and the beauty has been lost.

So can anyone give me any advice for the future? Does having the resolution set higher increase picture quality? I assume it does but I just want to double check.

I have a Canon Ixus 75.

That's my favourite of a set. If anyone wants to see more, just ask. There are some good pictures but a bit too much flash in some of them. I'm just a big, fat camera noob all round really.
