I wish I could take photos of the moon, even with a D80 I can't :( Good photos though, was that on Saturday? Me and a friend noticed only a tiny crescent was out.

Yeah it was saturday.

What is the zoom on the D80 like? The top picture is using my camera's optical and digital zoom and a zoom lens giving 42x zoom overall. I have the wee kodak dx6490 which has a 10x zoom lens, and 3x digital zoom. The added lens is a 1.4x zoom lens.

I have many more failed moon shots than I have successful ones! I am proud of the second shot as it's the first time I've had a good picture of the moon plus something else where the moon is still pretty prominent.

Don't use digital zoom, just crop the optically-zoomed picture afterwards. You get better results, plus you have more control over the final image.

Yeah, I know I shouldn't, but I'm a sucker for seeing that EXTREME CLOSE-UP when I take the photo. Moon shots just look a little... little at 10x zoom.

That is actually brilliant

Errr Actually the exposure on the left is fookin' horrendous. Chop it off or lower the exposure.

I disagree - I think it looks great - and better than it would if it was a generic panorama. It has style. I normally strive for the best exposure/sharpest picture but it can sometimes leave the picture soulless. One of my best pictures I took from a moving car and it has more atmosphere than I would have been able to get from a perfect exposure.

I have no idea how to get the expose 'right' on my camera, could always try and mess with it in photoshop though. It rarely looks normal. Most of my pictures come out too dark or far too bright. Example (first two in exactly the same place, same time, just aimed my camera differently)

Set the camera to its manual setting, by the looks of things from those two photos it's auto adjusting depending on how much light is there. You point it at something really bright like the clouds and the exposure drops, point it at the ground where it's darker and it's goes up, making the sky all one bright blur. If you want it perfect, as the eye sees it, you have to start going into HDR stuff.

I using my basic knowledge, someone who knows more will come and correct it soon. :D

Haven't had time to tweak them in Lightroom yet, so most are too dark.

I get home after dark and it's been raining all week, hence why I only have pictures of dogs so far.

The view outside my window when I go to bed. A bit blurred, but it was infeasible to set up a tripod on the windowsill.
