Anyway, the great pandemic of 1918 was caused by birds and aided by pigs - chickens and pigs were in very close proximity in the warzones of WW1 and it's thought that the virus developed then. This virus is born of pig and has developed human-to-human transmission capabilities, spreading worldwide out of absolutely nowhere. We don't know if it'll become a pandemic, or how many will die or be affected - it's likely that we're near the final death toll even now - but it's worrying that this can happen so unexpectedly.

As I told him at the time, it would never kill close to 125 million. The great flu in 1918 didn't get close to that amount and that spread though a war-torn, devastated Europe with a decimated infrastructure. To suggest one now would kill more, with all our better understanding of the disease, better treatments and national health service just doesn't bear out.

I should think that number comes from a straight forward scaling up of population density and/or absolute population. There are two or three times more people around these days.

Not too worried, as has been pointed out we do have anti-viral drugs and if you are careful you can just avoid catching it. 'Though I may just buy a few extra tins and bottled water as the real danger is panic (people not going to work, services breaking down etc.), not the actual disease.

Doctors in Mexico are saying that anti-virals and vaccines are having little to no effect, so yeah, pretty much.

I've been practicing holding my breath all weekend.

Seriously though folks, I've got a DJ mate who flew (LOL) over to Mexico two weeks ago. He's supposed to be coming back this week. I hope he's alright, but if he thinks he's visiting us anytime soon he can strawberry float off.

So far this year, I have eaten NO mince pies.

I dunno, the human-to-human transmission mixed with the fact that it's likely been spreading everywhere since March has me just a little concerned this time.

Asia's SARS and Bird Flu killed us all a few years ago. Now it's Mexico's turn. 8-)

What seems to be being ignored is that those who have been confirmed as having the strain outside of mexico only appear to be suffering from a minor illness. They are just being admitted to hospital as a matter of caution that's all.

However i have just been to tesco and starting to think that i should go back and buy some bottled water and the like. But i'm watching Backlash now. That's more important.

Anyway if it does become a massive problem, i'm prepared, i watched every episode of Survivors on BBC. All i need is a manor house, a white mother, a black man who keeps his history a secret, a white male criminal, two asians (one muslim, one non believer) and a fit nurse who turns out to be a lesbian. Although they did have pigs, that doesn't look like a good idea at the moment.

This wont turn into anything super serious as it's been to well documented and people are watching out for it. I'm more worried about something with a long incubation time turning up in a large city where people will have flown to many other countries and spread the condition before it even gets noticed by the authorities. That's when we'll be really screwed.

Someone said this was totally unbelievable, that it'd never happen! Then pigs flew.

Chances of winning lottery 1: 14 million.
Chances of getting Piggie Sniffles: 1:67million

The news have nothing - That missing woman hasn't been found, no-one of REAL interest has died, no missing children have been hand picked by the media for the front pages. They need something.

Some people have died of a weird flu, 1000's of people die from normal flu every day.

If were in medievil england, I'd worry.

Relax, enjoy life, kiss girls.

Having played Pandemic quite a bit, I'd say that Madagascar is probably our safest bet for a bolt hole.
