I remember loving those back at launch. I wonder how I would feel about them all these years later. Probably "not great".

I'd class Oddysey as the last in the 64 style myself, but maybe I'm wrong? Also yeah, Mario moves so fast I thought I was seeing things.

Well I suppose it's in the style, but I feel like sunshine was more of a set environment to explore with a clear objective each time, whereas oddysey is more of a free roam to get things in a more bite sized fashion. I prefer the longer objectives i think is what im saying.

I found playing Sunshine in 2020 a better experience than in 2002, but I believe it was predominantly down to me being older and a little more accepting of it. Great fun for the most part except for Pinna Park being far poorer than I remember.

I remain of the view that Sunshine is very front-loaded with the first half of levels being FAR superior to the latter few, besides Noki Bay.

Odyssey is more like Mario 64 than Sunshine. Sunshine tries to follow a similar format to 64 with the super specific tasks, but they're often locked to those specific missions. With Mario 64 and Odyssey, in most cases, you can find any star or moon within the level at any time, regardless of which mission you picked. But in Sunshine, so many things are tied exclusively to specific missions, even some blue coins. The levels change a lot depending on what mission you pick.

Daily reminder of the 3D All-Star collection official ranking: 64 > Sunshine > Galaxy

Odyssey is more like 64 by virtue of being good, I agree

Going back to Mario 64 on this, camera wise, the best option seems to be the Mario one and flicking the right stick down to zoom out? The Lakitu one feels worse.

Woah. I play a lot of Mario 64 and have always used the Lakitu two (Lakitwo?).

I've just tried the Mario-long one out of interest, I'm not sure there's that much in it? It's a bit more up-high and aloof than the Lakitu-long? I think I love the low-slung Lakitus better just because I think it gives a bit more sense of up-closeness to the action and of forward-movement (I also think it seems to re-centre a bit quicker behind than the normal Mario one?). But I may just be more used to them.

One thing I noticed is that Lakitu does actually direct things a little more than I thought compared to the Mario one, i.e. when you beat a boss like the big Thwomp in Thwomp's Fortress it has that very stylish zoomed out view of the boss arena with the star to grab, whereas with the Mario-long it was business as usual! There may be other examples.

I have no idea what the Mario-close is meant to be for.

I think what I like about the Mario-long cam is that it follows behind him? So if you are running along, turn to the side and stand still a second the camera will go behind him again. For the trickier platforming sections I found it easier using this than Lakitu personally.

Yeah Mario-cam options are good for some of the precision movement sections, but it's pretty rare that I use it outside of those

I’m surprised they haven’t re-released it to match up with the movie coming out. Generate buzz again

Or they could release a "limited time only" Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for £49.99.
