Eh? The second was better then the original. How can that be a decline? (Though I know what you're getting at.)

Indeed, the second game is still the staple of intelligent horror in gaming, nothing has surpassed it yet. The third game was pretty great too, but definitely more of an extension to the original game, but the fourth was awful - only the story managed to redeem it a little.
Origins was a decent attempt, but the combat was poor and the story took far too much from the film and should never be classed as canon due to the liberties it took with the existing story.
Homecoming is a definite return to form with rewarding combat, fantastic atmosphere, gritty visuals, a well-told story and some memorable characters.

Rewarding combat? Memorable characters?

The combat was abysmal and none of the characters will go down in Silent Hill lore as memorable.

I would say Adam is a pretty memorable character, he has to make some damn hard decisions.

Having to choose which of his children to sacrifice. You learn a lot about Adam, how he tried to get Alex interested in the military but gave up (maybe at this point, choosing him as the sacrifice) and turned his attention to Josh. I found the relationship between Alex and Adam fascinating, how it seemed they hated each other but you find out Adam really loved Alex but was just mean to him to make the sacrifice easier on them all. And finally, how Adam decided to hide the fact he failed the sacrifice from the other families, yet doomed them all. He has a lot on his shoulders, and a lot of layers to his character if you look for it. I love Adam.

I never really gave Adam that much thought to be honest. But now I see him in a very different light and like him more. Thanks, Dan. :D

I absolutely strawberry floating love Alex though. He's definitely one of the best protagonists of the series. And the combat is good when you get used to it enough to be able to kill monsters without losing loads of health.

I think Cosmo is being really unfair on the game. :(

Maybe because I appreciate what makes a good prequel.

I loved Origins when it first came out and thought it was among my favourite SH games. I now realise I did not like it as much as the others and it is my least favourite. The whole mirror thing was really annoying. Still a good game mind.

Glad my little post made you realise this. ;)

I was kind of heartbroken when Adam gets killed. At that point you realise he is a good person but personal circumstances forced him to make a bad choice, a choice that sets the old gods on him. Must suck for Alex, having his whole family dead.

Dont suppose anyone has any questions relating to the story? I'm in a Homecoming mood now, been researching some more!

I can't wait to get some of the other endings. I imagine they'll add to Alex's character even more.

Definitely use the knife on them, keep your distance and then move in quickly with repeated slashes, you'll pick 'em off easily that way.

Will have to do that since I'd need to save few health packs for boss fight. I went in with half health & only health drink and I got pwnd. :( I'll attempt again after I've played some games on SFIV, though.

Whereabouts are you, Seven? I'm trying to break out the Police station. But those new, hammer type head monsters are a bastard, how do you kill them?!

I'm at (Hotel):

the bit where you have to recover 3 postcards for someone so you can get Strange Key to open the door leading to kid, but on way you'd have to fight 3 nurses which I'm struggling at the moment because they're rather fast this time. :? If I just keep going on, I'll be on my way to first boss which is why I'm reloading "dump" save to re-try nurse section so I can get 2/3 health drinks for first boss.

I think I've missed one or two collection items. I've found the serum at Hotel which is appearantly second one, I must of missed first one.
