To be fair its very hard to remember stack sizes over a long time.

True. I always make a point of regularly checking out the stacks of my tablesmates and my own stack as well so that I always know where I'm at in relation to their stacks. It's also handy as with practice you can become really quite adept at accurately estimating stack sizes with just a short glance. As a result things like the blinds and stacks always stay with me throughout live tournaments when considering past actions from each player.

Oh when Im in the midst of it, I know exactly where I am - I am basically a solely live player. Can't remember hours later though! I made one fold with A-TEN earlier on in the game which I felt was quite tight, but I thought someone was being tricky so I urred on the side of caution. K-Q-J come out and mass betting began! -sigh-

Dangerblade wrote:So, uhhhh...poker.

I'm a newbie; I got into it playing some card games at my girlfriend's place and figured I'd play it online a little (Texas Hold 'Em). I'm not ready for cash games just yet due to various reasons, but I've been playing some free flash games and suchlike. I realise doing so doesn't exactly count as good experience for a proper game, as nothing is at stake, but it's decent for learning how the game goes, if not for learning strategy.

I have a couple of books - Texas Hold 'Em Poker: Win Online by Paul Mendelson and Texas Hold 'Em For Dummies by Mark Harlan - but was wondering if there were any other books, websites etc that are recommended reading for a poker novice. I'm going to do a lot of reading before I even attempt a cash game.

Oh, and another question, does anybody know when poker is back on Sky Sports? Summer, I'm guessing, to tie in with the WSoP?

Check out the articles section in the first post of this thread, it has lots of links which you should find helpful.

One of the most important things for a beginner to learn is bankroll management, so read a bit about that and it should relieve any concerns you have about playing with real cash, but obviously never play with money that you can't afford to lose.

Currently 1st out of 15 in a $4 8-max [1000 entries] MTT. 8-)

Update:
Well that was a disaster

Finished in 12th. I lost most of my stack to this one donk who chased a straight and hit it on the river. He also bluffed a lot and so a little later I paid him off thinking I was ahead when I'd hit something but he had a monster.

After that I was at the ~10BB stage and none of these players were betting properly, their pre-flop raise size was about 4-6BB when it should have been 2-2.5BB, making it hard to steal without a hand. Eventually I shoved with A6 in late position but ran into 88.

I may stick $50 back in to some site and try and work it up. Where's the best place to start that low currently? Still Stars?

I'd really love to play but it's too short notice to book the Monday off of work provided I go deep (and with those stacks it's pretty difficult not to).

That's really the only notable one, yeah. There are links to various world series final tables in the first post. Not really the same thing I know.

Another poker film is 'The Grand'. It's a comedy and notable for featuring many famous poker faces, and also for the fact that the final table of poker was played for real and not scripted.

It's not great but it's alright. If anything the biggest flaw is the fact that the poker was real because the actors don't know how to play poker as well as their characters would, and so the final table of the tournament is full of lol-bad poker.

Cheers guys, I was thinking Rounders (it was the only one I'd heard of) but I'll check out The Grand too. Also been meaning to check out the videos in the first post, so I'll get around to that later as well.
