Phatman wrote:I have completely outgrown the pub poker league I play in. There are three types of bad player in the league:

1. Donks - don't understand bet sizing, don't understand position, don't understand the percentages, often suck out in an infurtiating fashion, often calling stations making it next to impossible to bluff effectively.

2. 'Old School' Players - very passive, have difficulty understanding how strong their hand is likely to be in relation to the board, prone to getting excited over any big ace, often min-raise or min-re-raise.

3. Amateur Sharks - very aggressive, overthink certain hands and arrive at ridiculous conclusions, bet out at un-raised pots in late position unconvincingly, make 'hero' calls in an attempt to look like a genius.

I certainly fit into the 'Amateur Shark' category on occasions, but it's become tedious playing with most of the regulars. It often comes down to luck of who is on your table to start with. Today for instance I lost all my chips with two hands. In the first hand I lost about a quarter of my stack to a Donk who called a re-raise on the flop with a gutshot and ace high (I had an overpair). Naturally the turn completed his straight and I was forced to fold realising he probably would call down for a gutshot - sure enough he flipped over his cards after I folded to reveal exactly what I thought. In the second hand I shoved over the top of a 3x raise in late position (about four times the raise) with AK and get a call from an 'Old School' player in the big blind with AJ. A jack comes on the river to give him the hand. This I feel is a typical example of the 'Old School' player overvaluing a big ace pre-flop, not considering the strong possibility that he is dominated.

I'm doing well in higher stake SnGs and cash games, but I find I can't play effectively against donks or 'Old School' players anymore. Anyone got any good advice? It's embarrassing to lose to these players and it's infuriating that they are possibly under the illusion that they are playing good poker.

Theres no question that you need to be able to beat this game if they are that bad to be able to to combat similar situations in the future. When you have strong hands, raise higher then maybe you usually would - you are guarenteed at least one call unless the table is full with utter rags.

I find getting them on tilt makes them even worse. Theres some good advice. ;)

I used to play poker all the time. Started on Sky Poker, then went on to play on PKR. At the times when I didn't have a job it's what I lived off. Haven't played in a while though and I'm thinking about getting back into it.

As far as IRL poker goes, I've played very little. Played a few times, the one time I'm really proud of is being ridiculously hammered, walking into the Tottenham Court road casino, buying into a rebuy game and coming out with 300 quid an hour later.

I've hardly played any poker at all this year (early mornings mean i'm always too tired to play in the evening), but I'm going to try and play a bit this weekend. I ran good at my M.O.T today (only needed one licence plate) so I take it as a sign that I'm gonna win $1,000,000 plus the Lamborghini on Sunday. 8-)

I think i'm just going to try and satellite in at the weekend. If I don't win a seat then I probably won't play as I have to be up early Monday anyway.

It's the sunday million, so $215 buy-in.

I've just begun my quest to win a seat and got off to a good start:
Poker Stars $8.00+$0.80 No Limit Hold'em Tournament - t300/t600 Blinds + t50 - 9 players - View hand 1216704

Edit: And just like that I am out. AT < A7 followed by 33 < JT. Hope the next tourney goes better...

I just checked how much insurance will be for my Lamborghini and it's £6000 but that includes me parking it on the street in a dodgy area of Bristol so not too bad for a £140,000 car.

Hasn't been going too well at the tables so far today, but got a couple of games where I'm doing ok:

47/59 in a $11 rebuy, guaranteed $100, $7k to the winner.
Just won the first table in a shootout sattelite to the $5M, so just need to come 4/10 to win a seat, guaranteed $35 for my troubles anyway.

Edit: 20/55 in the rebuy now thanks to AK > QQ :D

Down to two tables now in the rebuy, i'm 9/18. :D

I got knocked out of the shootout in 6th or 7th. Got it in on the turn as 86% favourite with two pair, other guy had 1-pair, but board paired on river cancelling my 2nd pair out and giving him higher kicker. :x

Still, I'm gonna buy-in direct to the $5M seeing as I've done ok in this rebuy tournament.

Edit: Finished 11th in the rebuy for $352. I should have easily been at the final table as I was 2nd in chips for a long time but then it all went wrong. First I lose a large chunk of my chips raising with 33 and then calling a shove thinking it would be a flip but actually he has JJ, then I shove against a stealer with AT but forget there is still someone behind me to act and they wake up with AK.

The $5M turned out to actually have a prizepool of $11,825,600

There were 59,000 entrants and I finished in ~29000th place

I got off to a good start winning several small hands very early on and building the 10k stack up to over 12k, but about an hour in I got moved to another table which had two supernovas and at least two other very solid players. It's hard to do much as I'm not given very many steal opportunities and when I get good hands I am forced to fold them:

Poker Stars $200+$15 No Limit Hold'em Tournament - t100/t200 Blinds - 9 players
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

BB: t9044 45.22 BBs
UTG: t5274 26.37 BBs
UTG+1: t26319 131.59 BBs
Hero (UTG+2): t12307 61.53 BBs
MP1: t10300 51.50 BBs
MP2: t12775 63.88 BBs
CO: t7681 38.41 BBs
BTN: t9950 49.75 BBs
SB: t6350 31.75 BBs

Pre Flop: (t300) Hero is UTG+2 with QImage QImage
UTG calls t200, 1 fold, Hero raises to t645, 2 folds, CO raises to t7681 all in, 5 folds

Final Pot: t1790
CO wins t1790

Poker Stars $200+$15 No Limit Hold'em Tournament - t250/t500 Blinds + t25 - 9 players
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

Hero (UTG+1): t10262 M = 10.53
UTG+2: t13024 M = 13.36
MP1: t12696 M = 13.02
MP2: t6930 M = 7.11
CO: t10686 M = 10.96
BTN: t16346 M = 16.77
SB: t13280 M = 13.62
BB: t26830 M = 27.52
UTG: t17648 M = 18.10

Pre Flop: (t975) Hero is UTG+1 with QImage QImage
1 fold, Hero raises to t1125, 5 folds, SB raises to t2850, BB raises to t7000, 2 folds

Final Pot: t7050
BB wins t7050

Still it was a good experience. :D

Crazy.

Can the Lambo be swapped for cash or sold to whoever came second or something? I wouldn't have a clue what to do with it if I won..

There's no cash alternative for the Lamborghini. It says if the winner declines to accept it then it will awarded to 2nd place but really who's going to turn it down? Even if you don't want it, it's worth over £100,000.

Went to another back street poker game today hauled myself £100!

Small blind shoved me and I called off with KJ (very low on blinds, both of us!)

Q7 wins!
