To be fair, at lower stakes, there is more gambling involved. I'm trying to build my roll past the point of the uberdonks who gamble on any two cards and try to get to the stages where a little more poker is played. I've had a few massive coolers but regrouped from them, and even though I know $15 an hour won't last forever, it's all relative if I can climb the stakes.

The beats are hard to take, but I tend to just leave it for a day and regroup.

In short, I was where you were about two months ago DML. I didn't want to play at all. So I didn't. I took 2-3 months off, played only when the time felt right and when I actually wanted to play. This is the most important thing as far as I'm concerned - you shouldn't play if it starts to feel like a chore, or if you feel you have to.

Things aren't going great for me right now either but it's just a case of trudging on, buddy.

I earn $10/hour based on my hands in my database. That isn't terrible considering it is $20NL and I have played £50NL. It's nothing to live on, but it's the beginning. Everyone has to start somewhere. Some guys from Warwick started playing poker like 2 years ago and now make upwards of $50,000 per month. The reason is absolute dedication. They would grind out 30,000+ hands a month, do lots of reading and review hands. I think if ou were prepared to put the time in you could begin to beat cash games at the low stakes easily. That said poker isn't for everyone and some people won't make it to $100NL before they just quit. I'm not good enough to make a living from this but it's only a couple of level jumps before I *could*. (Not that I will).

Take a break from poker but don't leave it for good. There are always people who have more experience than you that are willing to help you out. Stop playing tournaments because of the variance and play within you roll. =[ (Still see you sundays right? :D)

EDIT: I didn't play cash games really for most of this year. Jan and Feb were very very low volume and March/April were empty as was the start of May. It got to the point where I wasn't enjoying playing anymore so I didn't. Like Drumstick this was good for me. Now though it has got to the point where I want to play again and I am loving it. Hopefully I can take my momentum into my summer break.

EDIT: NOVA, SYKES AND SATRIALES VIDEOS PLEASE. :D

Dude stop playing above your roll! Don't you have to be rolled like $1.5k to play 50NL?

Define a "meaningful bankroll." I think you may expect to run it up a little too quickly and with being underrolled, this inevitably leads to busto land. There is nothing wrong with buying in at cash for a dollar and playing simply for fun.

DML wrote:JI have never had a big online win, compared to two big ones live - I just think I'm a much better live player - I dont have the cash to piss about, and bubbling four times online and live in the space of 72 hours in four successive games is sick. Plus, I played cash - got my money MORE than in good, got rivered by K-7. I'm either not good enough, not lucky enough, haven't got the bankroll to play at all, or susceptible to tilt. Either one of those is bad news, and with everything else thats going on, its just getting me down.

I imagine the majority of people won't have a big online win, not that it matters. The majority of your profit over time will be from the grind of either cash or sng's. Also, if you're stressed about bubbling just four times, you shouldn't be playing, so props for realising that. The suckouts shouldn't matter if you're rolled but I've been over that. As for the last bit, it's down to you to figure that out, although I'll add that when you decide (If?) to play poker again, you should sit down and look hard at your game and yourself first. Read hand histories, post them here, think about exactly why you played this hand that particular way and you'll be a much better player for it.

DML wrote:JTruth is, although I have by far the worst online record, no-one in this thread has a really amazing 'profit per hour' margin to shout home about, so even if it was a massive turnaround, its still only going to turn into a 'nice little earner' and not something thats going to supplement my wages. I think I've also had my head turned by working in a bookies in the last few weeks. Betting is bad news, the evidence is plain to see, and yet I have had a few small bets myself. Why? The evidence is there staring me in the face thats it not the best idea! Every one of us is going to go on a massive cooler, I had one a few months back, and it was sick, there was NOTHING I could do right. In the end - in my eyes, I don't see if its worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the game. Love it. And for it to work there needs to be at least something at stake, but I am finding myself increasingly out of love with everything thats surrounds it. I wanna be a poker player, but not a gambler, and I could see myself slipping into that territory if I do not take a long hard look in the mirror.

Sounds like a tilty mental issue to me. Regarding the bold bit, I think you may be getting confused between winning money and playing a hand well. It shouldn't matter if you lose the hand or not, provided you played it best against your opponents percieved range of hands.

Here's hoping you return a stronger better player. We'll be right here waiting for you. :P

True. Sincerely though. Videos?

I don't know what it is with $10NL. I just don't make any progress whatsoever and I know (!) that I'm good enough and play well enough to beat it.

The confidence is there, and the play is there.

Well, glad I didn't record that session

I ran so cold in the couple of hours I played tonight it was unbelievable. Any set I made was insta-folded to and any top-top I get ran into a set.

I ran below EV for the first time in a while, but I'm pleasantly surprised that I only lost $22. My roll stands at about $865, but it could have certainly been worse. A particular hand I was proud of getting away from without raising:

Roll back at around $870 (hit 855 yesterday), after playing for about 45 minutes, so that was good, but third session running I've been below EV. If I start running a little cool that's actually not a bad amount to lose to be honest, as long as I can escape the bad situations.

Check this out. Good read, followed by security, followed by megalolz.

Ended that session just now. A 100 minute session and ended up $50 up, and even though it was under EV still, I'm very happy with that return. I really shouldn't have called with the AK which lost me $25, but can't complain too much.
