I was thinking about this a while ago, and I don't think it's necessary in Motorstorm. You can see how fast you're going, and if you're going faster than the others then you'll overtake them. It's one of the only racing games in which I reckon knowing how fast you're going in terms of measurable units is irrelevant, if you've tipped the opposition off a cliff/into a rock/tree then you're going faster than them
I agree to some extent, but you'd be surprised at how much of a help it is to know you're speed and then whether you need to boost or not. You'll get to know the top speed at different points of the track and then if boosting is worth it and it will also give you an indication to which vehicle is quickest round each track. I know the Bigger vehicles rule the roost in our sessions but that's just because we all like a bit of carnage. The smaller vehicles are quicker round most of the tracks.
I know more often than not you're boosting to catch up with the guy in front, but if you're already going top speed and boosting only gets you another 2 or 3 mph then I'd save my boost to another part of the track where it could get me 10 mph. I do this anyway, but a speedo would make it easier.
Sorry, went off into driving game geek mode there for a bit. Oi Oi smash him off a cliff etc etc.
