Miyamoto Not a Huge Fan of Mario Kart 7 Customisation
Posted Wed, 23 Nov 2011 by James Newton

But he came around

One of the biggest additions to Mario Kart 7 is the ability to change up your racer to suit the surroundings: big tyres, little tyres, that sort of thing. That's not to say that everyone within Nintendo was keen on including customisation though, with gaming genius Shigeru Miyamoto revealing he was against it initially.

Speaking to Famitsu (translated by 1up), Miyamoto said he didn't think winning money to buy new parts was in line with what makes Mario Kart fun:

I was actually pretty well against some of the customization features of the game, though. It can be fun to win money for racing and use it to buy parts and such, but I didn't think that had much to do with the core fun of the series. The idea for that came from the studio staff, though, and my final response was 'If you can build this customization on top of a solid control and gameplay foundation, then go ahead.'"

Seems the team was able to keep it all together, as Miyamoto relented and allowed the new feature to take centre stage in MK7.

If Miyamoto doesn't believe customisation is the big appeal of Mario Kart 7, then what is? Here he explains:

The core of Mario Kart is pretty solid by this point and I think it's safe to have it evolve in a pretty staid and traditional manner. The basic message here is 'Mario Kart's been powered up for the Nintendo 3DS,' and I think the online upgrades in particular are pretty neat. A lot of time was spent on how to get all the individual components working together — Wi-Fi and Street Pass, local and Internet play.

VS

In Versus, players can customize the races selecting personally the order of the racecourses and change other settings, such as setting the computer difficulty, the requirements to win the races, and the engine class of the player's car and the computer's cars. This mode is not available in Single Player mode. In Download Play, the players that don't have the game Mario Kart 7 in their handhelds play as Shy Guy and are unable to customize their kart.
Battle

In Battle Mode, the player can select one of the two types of battles available in Mario Kart 7 and one of the six battle courses that appear in this mode. 3 of the six battle courses are new, and the remaining 3 battle courses are from previous installments in the series.
Balloon Battle

Racers compete each other by popping the opponent's balloons to gain points in a time limit. all the racers start with three balloons and must use the items from the item Boxes to take away a balloon from their opponents. Hitting a rival is worth a score. If the racer has a balloon remaining and is hit, a point will be taken out and will be momentarily out of the battle to respawn with three balloons again and continue to play.
Coin Battle

In Coin Battle, racers collect the Coins spread in the battle course within the time limit. The racer that has the most Coins at the end wins. Racers can use the items to hit the opponents and let drop the Coins they've taken.

Nintendo :fp: Are they retarded or what? Just bring back the classic Balloon Battle. 3 hits and you turn into a bomb and then you're out of the game. Not this time limit respawning bullshit.

And you can't play the race courses on your own with a full grid. Have to play cups. They're going backwards. :fp:

If you consider gooseberry fool nothing wrong

Since it wasn't gooseberry fool, there's nothing wrong. If it was gooseberry fool then there'd be something wrong.

It's not a surprise they've changed the battle mode, as it seems to be considered an *awful* thing to have people not play multiplayer any more. 8 (?) player battles, when people wiped out early have to sit and twiddle their thumbs? Not for today's gamers, and especially not online.

Shame they didn't at least give the option of having the classic battle mode, but a time limited mode where everyone gets to *always* play suits the inclusive social gameplay that Nintendo always go for.

The point system does at least actually reward skill, as the person in the action who does the most damage but takes the least hits will be the battle mode winner, as opposed to the person who hides in a corner and just waits until everyone else has lost their balloons! Considering people apparently want more skill and less randomness, it sounds like a win-win situation.

My mum asked if I wanted this for Christmas, and I was like "lol bitch, u mad?* Like I'm going to be able to wait that long!"

* The "lol bitch" part was only in my head, she'd slap me if I actually called her that

This picture explains Chalky's reaction to everything in this thread.

Old battle mode was dire, you just ran away with your 3 balloons and waited for the other guys to kill each other.

Yeah, if you was a pussy then that would happen

64 battle mode has been one of the highlights of the series that for some strange reason has been neglected every since and to say it was dire over a time limit based one... Jesus, take your head out of Nintendo's arse for one minute :fp:

The old battle mode was great, but tbh I thought the new versions were really good too. It was more of an issue with the track design than the actual game mode itself that ruined them.

How close to Christmas is this out?

I was hoping to get a bunch of cheapo 3DS games for myself. This was one of the reasons I picked up a 3DS (And StarFox which I still haven't bought :fp: )
