Terminator 3. strawberry float the naysayers, I still really enjoy it. Maybe more-so than Salvation, but I haven't seen that in ages. Obviously not as good as 2, although Sarah Connor was really getting on my tits last time I watched it for some reason.

The Lovely Bones - Not quite sure what happened here. I was pretty compelled for the first 40 minutes or so; it was decent and the leading girl with the big blue eyes seemed like a good enough character, but just about everything after her murder (don't worry, that's not a spoiler) was not very good at all. The film just nose-dived in quality and never quite recovered. First of all: the CGI simply didn't work on any level. It looked tacky and these sequences were an annoying distraction if anything - like an idea half-executed which is sort of how I'd describe the entire film. You get the feeling Peter Jackson thought he was making a much better film than it actually turned out; a hodge-podge of ideas leaving it with no real strength.

Leading girl as I said was good but then a bit of a non-entity (hurr hurr) for about the last half. Wahlberg was his consistent self (that is to say he was consistently rubbish), Weisz didn't really seem interested and Susan Sarandon, while okay, fluttered in and out so much it's hard to say what mark, if any, she left. Best performance obviously from Stanley Tucci as the serial killer. CGI aside, I thought it at least looked nice.

The plot was low on anything that interesting. Found the whole kick-starting of Tucci's character coming under suspicion to be a little contrived (the daughter just didn't like the look of him). And apart from the actual scene leading up to the murder, it was absent on tension or atmosphere. The only deviation in the last hour or so from the meandering story coming in the form of your typical and overused sequence involving a character searching through the killer's home while he's away and OH MY GOD HE'S COME BACK HOME GETTHEFUCKOUTOFTHERE. There were moments that were potentially touching, but the lack of character development (the girl getting to kiss the guy at the end providing nothing emotionally), poor acting (Wahlberg) and mawkish sentimentality (the soundtrack) spoilt it.

I just wish it had been a little darker. Considering its premise (which I really like the idea of), Jackson never really made much of it. There were flashes here and there, but it felt tame. And before I stop writing, that ending, well, what do you say to an ending like that? It was baaaaaad. Good start but poor after that. Annoying as the film had promise and perhaps under another director it'd have succeeded.

3/10

There are so many amazing parts in this one little fight sequence. I think these ninjas dropped out of school after the first few weeks. Watch for the girly side-jump at 1.39.

How can you not love this ?

Its just mental!

Bad mental.

It's gooseberry fool. Like something a 13 year old boy would make. A complete mess of a film.

I loved the first Crank film though. Which is why the second one gets such a low score because I was expecting something at least half as good as the first one.

Its batshit mental, thats what makes it makes it so good!

Seraphim Falls - 7/10
Brosnan and Neeson are both very good in the lead roles and it was entertaining watching Brosnan's character come up with some unique ways of killing. Starts off great but tails off towards the end; the surrealist ending being the main disappointment.

This is pretty great. It's Miyazaki-Goro's (the main man's son) first work since the dissapointing Earthsea. And he's done himself very proud.

It's one of their "slow paced, life in Japan, nothing really happens" films, but if you liked Whisper of the Heart, you'll love this. Set in 1963 in Yokohama (where I was at the same day I say it, woo) it documents a period in Japan's post war history where they're trying to be as modern as possible. I'd say I literally understood about 50% of it, and managed to fill in the rest via visual cues (and explanations from a native afterwards), but the most confusing part was just my cultural background meant I didn't really "get" what their "Culture Club" was.

Anyway, it's strawberry floating beautiful, as you'd come to expect, tugs the heartstrings and the soundtrack is superb. Might be able to upload it for anyone interested in a few days, actually.

Look forward to this in a couple of years (if at all) boyos! 8/10

Oh, and watch out for Ariette, The Borrower soon, too. That's strawberry floating great. Get that soundtrack as well.

cool I am watching The Borrower atm, its out on blu ray in JP already so u kno lol, it seems to be a film aimed mainly at the younger audience. Looking forward to seeing From up on Poppy Hill, is it only out in cinemas at the moment?

Sorry for the late reply but yes, it's only out in Cinemas at the moment.

3/10 is a tad harsh isn't it?

I agree with some of your points though. The murder in particular wasn't dark enough. The rape and murder of a child is just horrfiying, but Jackson just skirts over this. And in the aftermath we see her in a Tellytubby afterlife, dancing around and just observing stuff. The film sort of gives you the impression that the girls death maybe wasn't that bad. When you should have been left feeling sadness and anger.

Also, the whole subplot with the daughter and the serial killer thing just didn't work. Just why did they suspect him? Because he looked funny? Suzie's influence from the afterlife?

However, I did enjoy it. It struck a chord with me. I think it's because I'm a parent myself.

Absolutely fascinating stuff. Didn't realise that Elden Tyrell was meant to be a replicant too  It's a must for all fans of the film. For my money it's the greatest sci-fi film ever made.

All those years you've championed the film and you don't know that?!?!?!?

No.

In the final cut it isn't apparent and the way it was shot didn't give you any clues either. What originally was supposed to happen was Batty would find the replicant Tyrell, kill him, realise he wasn't a human and then ascend the pyramid Tyrell lived in. At the top of the pyramid he'd find the real Tyrell, who had died 4 years or so previously.

Budget and time considerations meant they couldn't do this.

I think that was the problem I had; I can imagine a parent reacting strongly to it. It was on the way to a 4/10 and then the ending happened. I don't think I can ever watch the film again because of it.

What part of the ending? I saw it in the cinema on release, thought it was gooseberry fool and then promptly forgot most of it (apart from hilariously overdone scenes like the ships crashing into the dream-beach).

Tucci getting bonked on the head by a falling icicle and then falling off a cliff with some hilariously poor CGI.

Predator- 7/10

Nice little film to spend an evening with. Some of it is terribly, cheesy and over-acted....but that's why we love Arnie.

King of kong - 10/10.

Essentially a battle between good and evil on a level Star Wars couldn't touch.
