I only saw the Family Guy episode with Stewie dancing with Gene Kelly. I remember my mind being blown while I tried to figure out how the hell they managed to edit Stewie into some old dancing footage and make it work so great. Then I found out it was from an old movie and they just traced Jerry :fp:

Oh my god this is incredible. I didn't look at the size of a file I was downloading for a shitty recent horror film I wanted to check out (My Bloody Valentine), and when I loaded it up, I saw it was nearly 8GB! Loaded the movie, and it seemed to have two pictures playing side by side for some reason. Then I remembered those 3D pictures someone posted a while back...

It strawberry floating worked! It's in bloody 3D!

Now to see if I can stomach going the whole movie cross eyed.

It is a kids film. Doesn't mean it isn't one of the most charming and engrossing films ever, though. And it looks beautiful.

Other Ghibli hot picks -
Spirited Away - this is the one that won the Oscar, and got the west noticing Ghibli. It's okay in an Alice in wonderland kind of way. Not in my top 3

Grave of the Fireflies - shown originally as the other half of a double bill with Totoro. Considered one of the most important war films ever by some - make sure you don't feel suicidal before going in.

Porco Rosso - my favourite. An Italian WW1 pilot who is also a pig. Awesome.

Kiki's Delivery Service - another low key one, like Totoro, but slightly more happens. Also Kirsten Dunst does the dub.

Spirited Away is next on my list, I've heard good things.

Final Destination 5 - Surprisingly good. There's an interesting little twist to the formula in the middle, but they don't really do much with it. Loved the ending.

8/10

Bram Stoker's Dracula. 7/10

Really enjoyable in places, pretty shoddy in others. Total breast fest too which is always nice.

Aye. It's an undeniable historical fact.

It's clearly Verbal. It's a significantly poorer, less neat, less cohesive film if it's Kobayashi.

Bah. That isn't the point....

One of my favourite movies, so now I'll bore everyone again by mentioning that every single special effect was done on-camera (barring the pointless addition of rubbishy blue rings of light when they enter the Count's Castle Courtyard).

Quite a feat, but you'd think they'd also have spotted the many, many, many minor editing/continuity errors as they were all relaxing post-filming, congratulating themselves on being so super as they watched it all back.

It really is super though.

Some of the acting though.

Keanu Reeves' accent :fp: :fp: :fp:

Winona Ryder's accent :fp: :fp:

Anthony Hopkins hamming it up outrageously. :fp:

I should add that I saw this underage in the cinema. Back in the day, as long as you sort of looked 18 they'd let you in. 8-) I think it was the first 18 cert I'd seen in the cinema.

I know, I know, but it kind of doesn't matter when it's so beautiful. It's actually the only thing I've liked Anthony Hopkins in too.

I also recently discovered that the Texan love interest of Lucy is played by bloody Billy Campbell of 4400 and more recently The (american) Killing (mayoral candidate Richmond). Did not recognise him at all.

Remember when instead of asking for ID they'd just ask you your date of birth?

My mate went a year in the wrong direction - to make himself a year older he said a birth date a year later :fp:

Yeah, I'm aware that he isn't doing too well health wise these days. Seriously though, he looked good. Shame it all went fat and dead.

Drive 9/10

Holy gooseberry fool, what a film. Came out of the screening with a massive grin plastered on my face and that's not happened in ages. I agree somewhat with the "style over substance" thing but the two aren't mutually exclusive: the substance was part of the style. It was a very simple, extremely gorgeous film with an amazing soundtrack.
