The Usual Suspects - 9/10

So much awesome. Michael Madsen was great, Tim Roth and Harvey Keitel were great, Steve Buscemi was fantastic and the whole thing came together exceptionally well. The last five minutes of the film were just outstanding. I'm really glad I bought this.

I liked the bit where Tim Roth was identified as Kaiser Soze.

Oh gooseberry fool, I'm watching that tonight and got the names confused! Reservoir Dogs, RESERVOIR DOGS!

Also, I just watched 12 Monkeys. Another 9/10 from me, methinks. But I never want to watch it again, it evoked a horrible feeling of dread that I now can't shift.

I'm going through a load of fims from the last twenty or so years that I'm told are utterly brilliant but that I've never seen before. Tonight's efforts will be The Usual Suspects and one of Trainspotting, Leon or City of God.

That rule can pretty much apply to most of Horror films.

Saw, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street etc...

Scream is the exception to the rule I guess.

I thought Scream 3 is awful.

The rule can apply to a very long running franchise. Police Academy anyone?

Only one that dips in quality then shoot back up then fall back down is probably the James Bond series.

I was just about to Mention Scream as well. Really looking forward to the new one out later this month. Hopefully they can keep the level of standards up. Whilst the 3rd wasn't as good as the first 2, I still thought it was decent.

I forgot, I watched the New(ish) Nightmare on Elm Street at the weekend.

What a boring film. Crazy that they can make a film about a nutter with blades on his hand invading your dreams boring, but somehow they managed it. I watched it with a complete pussy of a human, the sort of person who gets proper freaked out by films such as The Strangers, or The Crazies, yet she was thoroughly bored by the end of it too.

4/10

Feels like such a long time since I watched a genuinly great film. Catfish or Diving Bell & the Butterfly are probably the last good films I watched. So much gooseberry fool out there.

There wasn't the significant drop in quality that say Hellraiser had although I guess Scream's always had a much, much larger budget than Hellraiser so no doubt the quality would be fairly constant.

Albear - It's out this Friday. Watched all 3 in the last week or so, so properly hyped for this. Hopefully going to see it next week on Orange Wednesdays.

Cool, I may break a habit and actually go to the cinema to watch that. I've always loved the humour in them. watched the first 2 at late night showings in the Cinema, and found them genuinly scary (in a jumpy HOLY gooseberry fool! type way at least)

I love the fact that they were very aware of what they were, and were happy to take the piss out of the genre. Some proper 4th wall breaking going on too which I thought was great. and the fact thay were happy to break some of the old traditional rules that most horror films abide too.

Be really interested to see how they do it in this one. I'm guessing from seeing a few trailers, that they are going to use the whole Iphone/Camerphone angle. Probably throw a bit of facebook in their too.

The dip in quality between Hellraiser 2 and 3 and Scream 2 and 3 is probably the same the former just then got a load more sequels that continued on the downward trajectory.

I watched Scream 3 the other day too, and although it wasn't as bad as I remembered, it was pretty gooseberry fool. Whilst one took the rules of the slasher and subverted them, three took the cliches and made them all again whilst yelling 'YES BUT WE KNOW IT'S A CLICHE THAT'S WHY WE'RE DOING IT AREN'T WE CLEVER?!'.

I'd say that most of the long running franchises have gems in the tail ends somewhere. They were a mixed bag, but Saw 7 and New Nightmare were good fun. Of course, for every New Nightmare, there's a Jason X. Better than the Reboots anyway. Halloween just didn't quite work, whereas Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm St were just dull as strawberry float. (I did like the twist at the end of Nightmare on Elm St though).

I love Jason X, it is the second best film in the entire franchise. It is unbelievably dumb but with some great one liners and death sequences. Obviously as a horror film it is rubbish but who cares.

Where do Jay and Silent Bob turn up in Scream 3? I haven't watched that film in about ten years.

Source Code - *****

I enjoyed it, a bit of a strange ending that didn't really suit the rest of the film, but overall a very good film.

I watched A New Nightmare just last night and it's surprising how well it's held up. I was impressed.
