This is what a film can be. Intriguing, confusing, thrilling... emotional. I was totally invested in this and, even though I'm sure that I didn't quite understand it, when arriving at the end felt like I'd experienced something.

It's quite slow and sometimes difficult to follow but the feeling of wanting to understand was engrossing. It's very well shot, too; not in a spectacular, elaborate way but in the feel provided by the darkness and the grey colouring.

Totally agree and this is one thing I love about Denis Villeneuve films-his use of colour is subtle but utterly beautiful. Gives all his films a very distinct look and made him a very good fit for Dune.

Remarkably consistent series! I enjoyed all of these, even 2 is often fun in its ridiculousness

The opera house sequence was fantastic, it really does ratchet up the tension!

Awakenings (1990 | Netflix)

A tough watch. The film is based on a true story of people suffering from encephalitis lethargica, a disease causing inaction; sometimes almost statue-like behaviour. A worldwide epidemic between 1915 and 1926 saw an estimated one million people around the world contract the condition.

Robert De Niro, portraying a sufferer of the condition, and Robin Williams, as a doctor, give standout performances and there are moments of joy, sadness and hope. With the film being over thirty years old, some aspects perhaps aren't presented with quite the care one might hope to see today, but it's still a challenging, informative viewing. [6]

Thunderball - 6/10 - but how does one strike like thunderball? what would that mean

Good Will Hunting - 7/10

I hadn't seen this in donkey's years and watched it the other evening. Apart from Robin Williams' lovely performance, I'm surprised at how underwhelming large parts of the film are. I seem to remember having a higher opinion of it.

Also, did they actually need Will to be one of the "greatest minds since Einstein!!"? The whole film struggles to know whether it wants to focus on an abused young man fighting his demons and learning to let people in - or be about a brilliant mind of limitless ability. It ends up neglecting the whole superhuman intelligence side of things completely. Will's personal struggles are such a serious, deep subject they really needed the film's full attention. The narrative is overloaded I think.

It's a shame, because elements of the film work really well.

Troy 8/10- You can't have the whole world Agamemnon it's too big even for you. The right level of hammy, not overly serious without being light hearted. They should bring back the (non-religious) Ancient Epic. This must be 3rd or 4th time of watching this and it's good.

The northman -3/10

Wtf was this supposed to be? It opens with a voice-over that sounds like papa lazarou, and has some bizzare accents going on. They may be authentic for all I know, but most of the time it sounded like Alan partridge trying to do an Irish accent. Nicole kidman in particular was awful in it, and did this manic laugh at one point that was unintentionally funny, like Dr evil or something.

Some of the action was pretty good, shame about the rest of it. Pretty boring overall.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023 | Netflix)

A Wes Anderson film based upon a Roald Dahl story. It's as odd and quirky as one might imagine; moving with great haste through it's forty-minute runtime. Quite strange but strangely entertaining, too. [6]

I've never seen the Liz Taylor version so have just ordered it. (Along with Dambusters and Memphis Belle)

Just watched Civil War.

Fantastic and realistically grim tale of a possible US civil War and a group of press reporters.
It never gets over dramatic or glorifies the conflict and is gripping throughout.

A must watch and easy 10/10

Really want to see this, will definitely pre order the blu ray as soon as it's possible to do so.

I've got this to watch sometime, I was really impressed by The VVitch and The Lighthouse from the same director. Hopefully I don't end up minding Kidman's Dr Evil!!!
