It's not a case of sugarcoating things, it sounds more respectful somehow. He'll always be dead from now on, but given that it's a very recent occurrence, 'has died' is much better. The finality of 'is dead' fits better when he's long since passed on.

Hmm, I guess so. I've just never seen the point of mincing words. I hate "passed away" and "moved on" and other such euphemisms. Not to say that I'm heartless, but I just don't like euphemisms where death is concerned. Much better just to spit it out.
