Tomous wrote:For protein shakes, my understanding is whey breaks down faster so is better post workout whereas casein is a slower release and better to have just before going to bed. So basically this is what I'm doing-whey post workout, a casein about 9pm in evening. I figured in the long run getting both would be no difference in cost or effort to having 2 whey protein shakes a day (which is what I was doing). Sorts out 50g-60 of my 150g protein target for the day, and I actually quite like them, they're surprisingly tasty especially with milk.

It's hard to say how big an effect effect it's had because I've changed a lot things up in recent months, but things are going well and I'm making progress I'm happy with so I'm going to stick with it.

Yeah this is how I used to do it.

I'd imagine it's healthier in general. I always mix in some peanut butter with protein shakes for a bit of additional nutrition and healthy fats.

In terms of building muscle, 30g of protein powder = 30g of protein in huel. Neither will be better than the other.

I used to be into all the casein, whey, etc gooseberry fool when younger but unless you're at competing pro bodybuilding level you won't notice the difference.

Never even considering Huel tbh, i am currently using PHD Synergy which has gone up in price recently (£50 for 30 servings) i'm wondering if Switching to Huel might be beneficial. I'm not a pro body builder or anything like that :lol:

I assume its Huel Powder is the best one, that or the Black edition?

I think the black one is more protein? Seems unnecessary. I don't know that much about them tbh.

Let us know what you think of the dodgy texture :slol:.

Trust me, you get used to it and might even come to enjoy it! See if you can get the water/milk balance correct (if you want to add milk at all, that is) to enhance the flavour while avoiding mixing issues.

I've been wondering this for a while and I think for me personally it is. I used to find with protein shakes they would go straight through me and I'd end up sat on the toilet 6+ times a day, but this hasn't happened with Huel. I can't help but assume it must be better to chug protein alongside carbs and amino acids, rather than on its own, right?

I can't tolerate milk any more :(

Turns out 8 pints of full fat every day isn't a great long term strategy for gut health :lol:

I've got that one. 33% more protein, which is good, but 50% less carbs, which is bad. Carbs are our friend! I think many people underestimate how important they are to the overall process. If you're trying to bulk/build muscle then I think it is just as essential to increase carbs as it is with protein.

Oh dear :slol:. Hopefully just a water mix is alright for you. Could always look into milk alternatives I guess.

Cool, maybe I’ll try the standard Huel Powder once I run out of my current powder and see how I get on with that. I usually only have one shake a day and eat the rest of the time to build up my intake.

GOMAD (gallon of milk a day) is definitely not a long term strategy. :lol:

Mark Rippetoe promoted it for skinny teenage boys doing the Starting Strength programme alongside American Football training too.

Was on the GOMAD for over a year, plus plenty of alcohol and 3 meals a day. Was weightlifting and boxing lots but think I only gained about a stone in that time, must have had a crazy metabolism at 19ish.

The caramel huel seems OK- defo had worse protein powders - though aye it is a dodgy texture eh. I canny get rid of all the lumps by shaking.

Loving the huel so far! Got the caramel one to blend properly now, is actually quite tasty and so strawberry floating convenient. Really handy.

Nope, I don't actually have my own account with them yet. I will create one when I run out of my current stock, and I'll remember to check for a referral code here (so you and Roc can fight for whose code I use :lol:).

Gotcha :lol: might have a quick look online to see if I can find one haha

You all have one shake a day? Was thinking of doing that as 2 bags would last about a month then.

EDIT: Order Huel Black Edition, my partner said she’ll use it as well and she needed the gluten free option so went for black. Got Choc and Vanilla and then a free pack of Salted Caramel as well.

Nice 8-).

I've had more than one in a single day before, but to be honest I consider it as a personal failure of organisation when that happens.

Within a 24-hour period:

Ideal = extra meal
Acceptable = partial meal replacement
Last resort = full meal replacement
Failing at life = multiple meals replacement

But that's just me! No judgment on whatever works for anyone else.

Yeah, I usually aim for one shake as a meal a day and the rest actual food, I’ll do the same with this as well.
