Shotgun is only useful when you either manage to sneak up on someone or overwhelm them with numbers. In a straight up fight people shouldn't be getting close enough to kill you with it.
Well I think that's a crock of gooseberry fool myself. With lack of radar it's actually pretty difficult to stop people getting close, and in this game there tends to be very little long range combat IMO, largely because of the way damage is dealt/recovered and the cover system, long range combat just doesn't pay so running in at close range is really the only effective thing you can do. Most of the maps seem to be designed largely around close quarters combat.
There are so many things I can point to in this game that are really bad, it does have this thing about it where you still want to go back to playing it but IMO there are a lot of flaws, I don't know if issues like the shotgun are down to connection quality or what but some things are down to basic game design like setting out spawn points. Spawning right behind an enemy is not good.. well it's good if i happens in your favour, but no fun when the boot is on the other foot. It seems to happen pretty regularly in this. Another thing I hate is not auto picking up ammo from fallen foes. I don't really want to spend ages looking at which gun is on the floor when I'm in need of ammo, having to do it manually in rather inconvenient.
I remember someone saying in one thread about Halo combat being a bit inconsistant but I'd argue this has the most inconsistant weapon combat of any game I have ever played. How is it that Someone can blow me to pieces with a single shotgun blast but if I do it at the same range it won't even down them? How is it that one time I can chainsaw some guy that is charging me with the retro rifle but another time it happens I get stuck like a pig?
