Prepare to hit the road in a Ferrari 458 Italia, the “Forza Motorsport 4”

Today Turn 10 Studios is also revealing that the cover car for the standard edition of “Forza Motorsport 4” is the Ferrari 458 Italia. The Ferrari 458 Italia is an 8-cylinder two-seater berlinetta with a mid-rear mounted engine, and represents a genuine break with the past in terms of Maranello's previous high-performance sports cars. The Turn 10 team has worked closely with Ferrari to include every intricate detail of the Ferrari 458 Italia in the game, from its sleek aerodynamic design to its exquisitely modeled 4499 cc V8 engine, offering players the most realistic driving experience off the track.

“The Ferrari 458 Italia was a perfect fit for the ‘Forza Motorsport 4’ hero car. It has the ideal blend of style, creative flair, cutting-edge technology and power that makes it just as gorgeous to look at as it is thrilling to take to the track,” said Dan Greenawalt, creative director of Turn 10 Studios. “We’ve worked closely with our partners at Ferrari to bring this amazing car to life in your living room.”

Get a head start on the competition with “Profile Import”

For those who have invested tireless hours in “Forza Motorsport 3”, Turn 10 Studios is pleased to announce a unique “Forza Motorsport 4” feature called Profile Import, which rewards fans for their time. Based on your player level and the cars in your garage in “Forza Motorsport 3”, gift cars will be automatically added to your “Forza Motorsport 4” garage and you’ll also receive bonus gifts and credits. And for those who spent hours creating intricate layers and liveries in the “Forza Motorsport 3” Livery Editor, you will be able to import those layers, so your time isn’t lost! :D

As I said in the conference thread, I'd rather be holding an actual steering wheel. And if not that, a controller. This is the last way I'd want to play the game.

Found this update:

We knew it seemed strange that the Turn 10 guys didn't actually give a name for what they showed on stage. Now we have a clearer picture of what it was: the Forza website calls it "Forza Motorsport Preview," and it was meant as "a select peek at one aspect of the future of the Forza Motorsport franchise." Whatever the next Forza game is, it will "[utilize] some of the ideas presented in this demo, [and] will ship in 2011."

So it was just a glimpse of stuff that will be featured in the next Forza game. Though they have confirmed the new game for 2011 at least, can't wait.

I'm totally on board the choo-choo for this one!

The Forza franchise is a fantastic racing sim, but caters for the whole spectrum of gamers, hardcore through to the most casual.

I'll not be interested in the Kinect method of controls, but sh*t the bed, it sure as hell won't stop me from trashing this game with my trusty joypad! 8-)

I shaved my ba**s for this?

They shouldn't have wasted their time with those Kinect features as nobody is going to want to steer with their hands instead of a pad or wheel, and using Kinect to look at a car is just completely pointless.

It was also my first experience actually interacting with Kinect and I went in quite skeptical. I was immediately shocked at how intuitive, responsive, and easy the system is to use. In the first part of the demo, players hop in a Ferrari 458 Italia and attempt to pass as many cars as possible. By holding ones hands up as if they were gripping a steering wheel, players can turn by miming the real-life motions.

Figuring out the sensitivity and strength of the capture took me all of two seconds as soon as I attempted to make my first turn. In the demo, acceleration and braking are governed automatically by the same guided system available in Forza Motorsport 3. Head tracking and leaning are used as well for an immersive experience. I set the high score for the night.

The hardest thing to do was keep my hands in position while turning with nothing to hold, but I'm told that the tech supports using props. The skeletal tracking can do its job even if you're holding an item. It's no where near as responsive as using a racing wheel or controller, but the experience is great for a quick "pick-up" and play session. Thankfully, the Kinect camera can recognize new players on the fly, removing the need for any recalibration when the next player steps up like with the PlayStation Move.

The second part of the demo, as seen in the Microsoft E3 2010 press conference, let's the player walk up to and inside a virtual Ferrari 458. The player can activate points of interest that play cutscenes and detail the specifications of the vehicles along with some fun facts ("Jay Leno owns three of these cars"). Again, it's very intuitive and easy to figure out on the fly. It's not game-changing, but it is a great way to show off the graphics and licensed cars.

Disappointed. I was hoping Turn 10 were working on PGR 5.

This new release won't be a whole new game. It'll either be Forza 3 with full Kinect integration whereby Turn10 has used all Forza 3 assets and maybe added a few cars to the roster, changed the challenges and possibly tidy up things they disliked when Forza 3 was released, OR, it'll be a smaller game.

Sounds good to me CD, anything new from Turn 10 will always grab my attention after the beauty that was Forza 3. Can't wait till they clarify exactly how this all comes together, either in Forza 4 or an upgraded edition.

So, in the time it takes Polyphony to make one GT game, Turn 10 create 4 Forza games.

I would be surprised if GT wasn't out this year, but yeah. Clearly spending all day around fast cars has had no effect on Polyphony's speed!

It's quite laughable really. GT will be excellent but it really isn't worth waiting that amount of time for when there's so many other good racers to play that have come and gone during it's development time. I've played all the GT games but have to say I've never had as much fun with them as I've had with Forza 3.

The way you walk around the car - by leaning left and right is utterly daft. Just give me an analogue stick.

As for the whole closing the door thing - pretending that hovvering your hand over a button is anything like closing a door must have been rather embarassing for him.

And the whole thing is stupid. The only thing I would want to do is the look into the corners thing and not enough to want to buy the camera.
