How can bread dry out? It's not like it's going to go crusty.

I often boil a big amount of potatoes and stock them in the fridge so I can briefly fry a few whenever I'm in for a quick meal.

But bread! WTF? Frozen yes, but just cool?

I don't understand 'cool' bread either. Coffee in the fridge, however, is a must.

My house mate does, it's utterly ridiculous. Between the three of them they keep pickles, eggs, tomatoes, bananas and bread in the fridge. It is beyond comprehension.

Edit - oh and ketchup, but cold ketchup is pretty nice.

"According to food scientists, the major reason that bread stales is not moisture loss, but rather a process called retrogradation, in which the starch molecules in the bread crystallize.
Retrogradation occurs about six times faster at refrigerator temperatures (36 - 40 degrees) than at room temperature, thereby making the refrigerator the worst choice for bread storage.
However, the retrogradation process does slow down significantly when bread is stored below freezing temperatures. The water molecules in the bread freeze, which immobilizes the starch molecules and prevents them from forming crystalline structures."

God I hate quoting myself, but it appears that my first post was in some way invisible to the people who put their bread in the fridge.

Please link this, I'd like to follow this up.

Who doesn't keep their eggs in the fridge?

Well you don't need to, they don't go off any quicker.

Edit - actually I'm investigating this. Don't remove them from the fridge yet!

Edit - Righty, seems to be a majority that say do put eggs in the fridge, but mainly as a precaution for possible bacteria contamination. However, fairly fresh eggs that are uncontaminated (obviously hard to say, but smell, presence of cracks, and ultimately taste would give it away) with unbroken shells are essentially disease free and would last well. A bonus for non-fridge eggs is that (according to Delia) room temperature eggs cook better.

Basically if you like to play things safe whack them in the fridge.

Bread should go supermarket - freezer - cupboard/bread bin. You don't see bread in the fridge at the supermarket.

Evn worse though, my gfs family doesn't keep their pop in the fridge, but on the kitchen top. Room temperature, diet, own brand coke FTL.

Going back to what someone else posted, carrots in spag bol is a must. Also sweetcorn.

Pitta breads in the fridge last longer. They go moldy in the bread bin.

Only when it's hot, otherwise it's fine in the cupboard.

Only Shallow, that quote is bollocks - bread stays fresher for longer in the fridge. Otherwise, the second and third loaf go mouldy before the first is finished. I also have a breadbin, so the loaf in use goes in there while one unopened loaf goes in the fridge. I usually have yet another loaf or two in the freezer. I like to think of it as the Bread Cycle.

Ketchup - says 'keep refrigerated once opened' on the bottle. Otherwise it seperates and, when you pour it on, you get this horrid watery mess on your chips/ burger.

Eggs - what do you do with the egg-rack in your fridge if not load it with eggs? Huh? Huh?

However, I frown on refrigerated potatoes. I mean, that's just sick.
