Ah the old bread in the fridge debate, much like carrot in bolognaise sauce or the gravy on fish and chips this debate is as old as time itself.

I freeze my bread and then toast it. Bread never goes off, fridge is free for milk and eggs.

But what if you happen to want untoasted bread? And apparently eggs go bad quicker in the fridge. Next you'll be telling me that you keep your ketchup in there, too.

I don't but my mum does. Sometimes pisses me off because I can't get quickie sandwich.

They do last longer in freezer, though. Even on packages they said you can freeze them to make em last longer, and when you want a toast anyway they're completely fine.

For normal sandwiches though......bread bin for me. I always buy my own bread so it won't be in freezer if i fancy sandwiches.

I only freeze bread when I have a defrosted loaf already in use. Once that runs out, the freezer loaf comes out of storage and gets slowly defrosted. 2 loaves cover me for 2 weeks.

In the summer, yes. Tends to go off very quickly, otherwise.

So for roughly 75% of the year, no.

Defrost it in the microwave.

But then the edges go all hard. I've tried it.

They're called crusts.

Alternatively, you're doing it wrong. I stand the slices up against each other, they seem to defrost fastest that way, and avoid any soggy bread/solid edges.

"According to food scientists, the major reason that bread stales is not moisture loss, but rather a process called retrogradation, in which the starch molecules in the bread crystallize.
Retrogradation occurs about six times faster at refrigerator temperatures (36 - 40 degrees) than at room temperature, thereby making the refrigerator the worst choice for bread storage.
However, the retrogradation process does slow down significantly when bread is stored below freezing temperatures. The water molecules in the bread freeze, which immobilizes the starch molecules and prevents them from forming crystalline structures."

God I hate quoting myself, but it appears that my first post was in some way invisible to the people who put their bread in the fridge.

Our bread goes in the cupboard and the rest is frozen to be defrosted when it is needed. Even though there is only 3 of us in our house sometimes there is about 10 loaves in the freezer.

What goes in the bread bin, stays in the bread bin.

Well it should be the freezer really but the fridge suffices if you're drinking it in a week or so. Fresh coffee i mean of course. I dont keep instant coffee anywhere because its a strawberry floating abomination!
