I'm the unproud owner of a 1.0 T reg toyota yaris, don't get me wrong nice enough drive for a starter car, butthe lack of fun and pace is just ruddy annoying me now (2 years since passing, motorways everyday...you get the idea), so I am now looking at going for a 1.8i 2000-01 VW Golf GTI...anyone got any experience of these motors or any other recomendations to look into?

I passed my test in a Yaris a few years ago now, and I was always fond of it. The clutch was really easy to get used to for a beginner. However it was also a diesel, so I suppose that would help too.

But yeah they're nice to drive, but about as sporty as a pair of old slippers and the interior is nothing to talk about. Japanese reliability though.

My chauffeur (girlfriend) drives a black Corsa that was brand new in April 07.

I've never taken a driving lesson in my life (28 years old). I should learn seeing as there is a car that I could use.

I've got an 08 plate Corsa, not my choice, but I get it through work and they pay for servicing and tax so can't complain, but looking to change to a 3-Series next year as the missus wants a bambino and it seems like a good cover up for treating myself to a nice car!

Wow, that's nice. I was looking at them when I was looking at cars (eerily, I got mine right at the end of April.. On the day GTA4 came out), but they hold their value too well!

So.. I got an Alfa 147, as seen here:



I've had the old 'it'll break! lulz" from literally everyone and their dog, JV even wittily said something like "it's a good thing the 147 is such a good looking car as you'll be spending most of your time looking at it from the outside".

It's had no problems though, and I'm thrilled to bits with it. It drives really well (feels really low and sporty, with quite a hard ride), the dash is really, really nicely laid out, and it looks teh sex, I think. It's also pretty rare. I mean, I nearly got a Golf (Mk4)... strawberry float me am I glad I didn't. I see about 5 of them on an average (10 minute) drive to work.

One of my best purchases ever. I love my car!!

mines a 420 D 96 rover bought it in 2006 for £500 no problems so far, it's being M.O.T. tested on wednesday so fingers crossed it passes.

Did you not foresee that getting a 1 litre engined car when you're on motorways every day is a terrible idea?

I'm on the lookout for my first car. I want a 1.4 polo that costs less than or around £1000. I'm having a hard time finding one near me though (Sheffield).

im looking to get an RX-8, always assmumed the insurance would be a killer but to my suprise it was only £100 more than my standard Focus!

Isn't the tax the killer on those?

yeah maximum group £400, fuel economy is awfull and it drinks oil but still 150mph o-60 in 6.4 seconds

The 0-60 is an overrated benchmark. My GTI goes 0-60 in about 6.5 seconds but the real thrill is 30-100+ when the thing goes like a rocket! Plus the GTI handles like a dream

How much are you looking to spunk on a car?

between 8-10k, cant explain why but i love the notion of an RX-8. I know they are flawed and there are better cars for the cash, but i love the crazy design, sporty and practical!

Go for it mate. You won't regret the decision, unlike Steve, who regrets making the boring, safe choice everyone else makes and declares his love for his ROCKET GTI!! on every page of his Car Threads, even though he knows that this GTI is the slowest yet.

Despite my immature slanderings of Steve's beloved hot hatch, I feel like I'm constantly breaking away from the desire to own one. I'm thinking of going for something like this.



That's a 1998 Jaguar XJR, 4.0l supercharged. That's the top spec engine wise, so even with a few years no claims I might have to go for one less powerful. Still, I just want one. In black.

ah ye of course i completely forgot that pre 2001 aren't affected by the new tax system (which is stupid as my car is pre 2001).

Whilst the prices increases for road tax are outrageous, I feel a lot of people are daft by taking on the massive debt of a new car to save £50-£200 in road tax.

A mate of mine just bought a Focus diesel for about £7k to save barely £100 a year in road tax and to save on fuel. This guy drives about 10 miles a day, so he doesn't need a fricking diesel! Oh, and he hasn't got seven grand either so it's all on credit. Mug! He deserves to read the Daily Mail.

I do 14 miles a day to work and back. I couldn't give a gooseberry fool if my car only did 20mpg. And I'd pay an extra £100 on tax to have a car I wanted rather than something with the power of a lawn mower, like FishFinger's hairdressers car.

Were there scissors and combs in the boot when you bought it, Fingers?

It came with a shoe rack and an extra large mirror in the sun visor for applying make-up.
