PostBroadband provider issues
by Curls » Tue May 07, 2024 7:36 pm

Hi guys,
Can anyone help me with acquiring new broadband....I'm moving into a new flat next week and I've been trying to sort out the broadband, but non of the providers seem to be able to give me broadband (even though the rest of my street seems OK?).

It feels to me like its a connection or wiring thing, but I wouldn't even know where to begin. Not having broadband isn't an option really as I'll be WFH a lot.

No idea what I'll do if i can't get broadband.

Any tips would be appreciated, even if it's just taking me to a website which looks at my property and tells me what I can get . Cheers!

Sadly U-switch don't even recognise my address in the postcode finder thing, and inputting it isn't an option.

Ah, that’s going to be a problem all round, because I believe they all use the same list.

You might have to resort to phoning. In my experience Plusnet are excellent at phone customer services.

After a few more hours of research BT seems to be the only one I can get, their slow broadband for a not great price....absolutely ideal xD

Starlink's another option at £75 a month, plus you have to pay for the equipment. But you'll get up to 100mb download a lot of the time I think.

If you’re in a 4/5G area, you might get better results using this kind of thing:

I had to use one when my landline was wrongly disconnected. The signal here is gooseberry fool 3G, but the actual hardware worked very well, giving much better speeds than equivalent mobile phone tethering. In a 5G area, it could be great.

I have no doubt your estate agent was aware of this and thought not to tell you...

So the way it works is, BT OpenReach (once part of BT but later spun out) installs the actual infrastructure for most phone/broadband providers. Virgin lay their own cables along with a few other companies.
BT, PlusNet, Sky, EE, Vodafone and almost everyone else uses the same cables. If BT is offering you service, then any of the other providers can also. The problem will be that their system doesn’t recognise your new address.
So the first thing you want to do is check your building has the actual cables connected to the local cabinet. Do you have a phone socket? Is there a telephone pole you can see connected to the building? Or are you aware of a newer fibre to the door connection coming into the building?
If there is, then it’s just a case of getting one of these companies to recognise your new address. I think the way you do that is by contacting the post office to make sure you’re added to the database most companies access, but I’m not totally sure.
If you don’t have any actual connection? Then that’s a pain in the arse. One of these companies needs to then put in a request with BT open reach to connect you, physically to the network, which could takes weeks/months.
Is this flat part of a new development? Is it a big apartment block? Or has someone converted part of their home into an apartment?

If it’s a new build maybe openreach don’t know about it?

Check this link

But is it a new property?

So this is the house I'm attached to.

What they've done is converted a part of their home into a separate building, and it's an older style home.

When I put my address into this search (thanks by the way). It only shows the one on the left (ultrafast full fibre) and says its not yet available as it does there, however the middle and the right options don't even come up. It's very bizarre indeed!

Also, I find uploading images onto the forum very difficult these days. I've got so used to using drag and drop techniques :fp:

I suppose you could probably ask them in that case. I’ll be surprised if they haven’t added in any provisions for broadband, but if they have, it shouldn’t be too difficult getting it connected.
Ultimately you need a broadband provider to recognise your address, sign up for their service, then they’ll send an engineer over to set you up. Worst case scenario, they see you don’t have any connection and refer BT Openreach to connect you. Which can be a ball ache, but the neighbouring connected house having a line will make it easy to branch off from.
