I was in Dundee today, it's reminiscent of an Eastern Block city.

Absolutely knackered and was going to have an early night tonight but I just couldn't tear myself away from that film.
Looking at the potential scale of the disaster retrospectively is terrifying.

just watched 40 mins of that, have to go to bed now, but strawberry floating hell, i never realised chernobyl came close to wiping out EUROPE

It's frightening how close we came to a continent-wide disaster.

not to take anything away from the firemen of 9/11, the certainly were heroes, but jesus, the firefighters at chernobyl pretty much saved the strawberry floating world, and i barely heard anything about them up til now.

Especially the ones who went in straight after with no protection and put out most of the primary blaze. It's just amazing that it was just like any other day, one thing goes wrong and causes the deaths of so many people.

That's probably because it's most likely a load of bullshit.

I just think that the fact that this is the first we've all heard of a Europe-crushing explosion after over 20 years means it's probably a bit made up or exaggerated.

Is that serious?

Did people really not know what happened at Chernobyl? I don't want to sound big headed or pompus or anything, (which I probably do sound like) but how can people not know about this catastrophe? I know the secrecy surrounding the Soviets had a part to play but this was huge.

It was only after the collapse of the Soviet Union that a lot of the facts about Chernobyl became public knowledge, before that, all most outsiders knew was that there had been an incident at the plant and the town of Pripyat had been evacuated.

It scares me to think that such a horrendous tragedy and ecological disaster can be almost forgotten after such a relatively short time.

As has already been mentioned, I doubt we've seen the full extent of the disaster yet.

I felt the same way when my sister told me she didn't know what the Hindenberg was. :|

The terrifyingly small amount that most people know about most huge world events terrifies me.

Damn, those are awesome. That abandoned and overgrown theme park never ceases to peak my interest. CoD4 did a good effin' job recreating Chernobyl. I feel like I've actually been there before. xD

I've seen a show that stated there are 49 deaths attributed to the chernobyl disaster. I don't know if this is some sort of atomic energy propaganda or the results from a serious unbiased study. They predict that 4,000 more people are still expected to die by cancer. But still, only 49?

Doing a google search showed that greenpace has their own study which suggests 500,000 people have died. Very... very different numbers.

excellent photos BLH.

And is it just me or did anyone else think they were looking at the real life CoD4 (One Shot, One Kill level?) The building where you take the shot, the playground, the ferris wheel.
