They were pretty slick, the Earth one was my favourite in the book so it was good to see that turn out all right. Although,the water one died in the book didn't he? I may be mistaken though.

Correct.
The water cardinal did indeed die in the book. Was a nice change, though Langdon also fought with the assassin in the fountain, which made me sad when they left it out.
